Well well well. Another week passed in Belgium. I really can't believe it. It is like I just got here yet I feel like it's been more than 2 weeks. Oh 2 weeks. I feel like there is so much more that I want to do here! Let's start off where I left off in the last blog.
Last Wednesday (6/4) was the grand premire of the 'Sex and the City' movie. My host sister got me a ticket over a month ago for the extravaganza. It was also 'Ladies at the Movies' night. Only women were allowed in the theater for the night. It was fun to see only women in the building. Before going to the movies, we went to Quick. Quick is the McDonalds equivalent in Belgium (it might be all over Europe but I'm not sure). It tasted just like McDonalds. We got to the movies and were escorted to the 'lounge' area. There was a big reception before the movie. We each got a goodie bag fille with an assortment of items, like a shaker and shampoo. There were tables set up all over. You could get a Coke Light, a glass of wine, or
even a Cosmo. I opted for the Cosmo to stay in theme with the night. There were tables for lotion companies and even Tupperware. You could put your name in a box for a drawing for prizes. Unfortunately, none of us won a prize. This movie theater uses row and seat numbers for every show. It was strange to have an assigned seat for the movies. They gave away all the prizes then three men in Navy dress whites walk in. They were strippers. Stippers before a movie. It was ridiculously hilarious. The women were screaming. I was just ready for the movie. We had been there for three hours. I didn't want to wait anymore. The movie was really good. I would like to see it again but with out French AND Dutch subtitles. It was a different experience to have subtitles on a non-foreign film.
Thursday night, my host mother had a dinner party. She had the table set up that morning. It's too bad the cats are allowed all over the table normally because there is always cat hair everywhere. I tried to clean some of the items off without them seeing me and before the
guests got there. They invited their doctor who (I think) my host mother works with. He talked the whole time he was here. No joke! He did not shut his mouth once for four hours. He couldn't even eat because he was talking so much. It was super annoying. We had this hors d'oeuvre that was strange yet delicious. It was half an avacado cut in slices with a salami type meat drizzled with a bleu cheese sauce. It was good. I had some wine at dinner, and after I talked to mom on the phone, I had to go to bed.
I woke up the next morning sick as a dog. It was terrible and it was rainy all day. I took a shower and then went right back to bed. My host mother woke me up to give me some medicine and sent me back to bed. It wasn't a hangover either (I know what you are thinking). It was a total sinus infection or something similar. I was alright after sleeping most of the day. I finally started studying for my test on Tuesday (today). They sent be back to bed early that night. On Saturday,
I woke up feeling better, but I knew that I would feel much better if I got up and walked around. I went to the mall to go shopping. I didn't buy anything. I just walked around the mall for like two hours. Then I decided to go to the Grand Place again and just walk around there. I forgot that it was raining. I was being brilliant and still walked around in the rain. There were so many American tourists out that day. I tried to look native so they wouldn't recognize me. haha. They were loud and obnoxious. I bought a few items for people at home and went back home and fell directly asleep while reading for class.
Sunday, I was much better. We went to the Euroferia. It was a Spanish festival. I think it was for the Queen's birthday (she is from Spain). There were tents and tables set up around the Atomium. The Atomium is a huge atom that was built for the 1958 World's Fair. And of course this year is the 50th anniversary of the 58 World's Fair. I expected craftsmen and people selling crap to tourists. However, I was wrong.
It was all food. Every tent was a mini restaurant of Spanish food. When we think if Spanish food, we think of Mexican. There was every type of Spanish you could think of: Spain, Bolivia, Peru, Mexico, Dominican Republic and Cuba. There were even Portuguese and Brazilian 'restaurants' set up. It was pretty cool. There were some flamenco dancers and other Spanish dancers performing as well. It was a nice and sunny day.
Today, I had my first exam for this EU class. My teacher is a short Jewish girl from Berkeley, CA, and she is mean. I don't know if she is making up for her short comings or what. She is a pistol. She warned us that our test was going to be difficult. I studied (not as much as I should have) and I felt prepared for the exam when I got to school this morning. Thank goodness I looked over the countries in the EU this morning on the metro. Half of what I studied wasn't on there either. Overall, I think I did well. People from my class were discussing it at lunch. They were freaking out about it. I just don't think I
did that poorly and there's no point worrying now that it's finished. I'll let you know what I get on it. I know you are all worried about my grade.
Have a good week! Au revoir!
