Having never been to Vienna, or in fact even Austria
before, it was going to be an adventure into the unknown. Having had the
Austrians for work experience at Hilltop and of course from pictures on the tv,
I had some idea of the architectural beauty of the place but nothing more.
Our campsite was huge, industrial even. With kitchens,
shower blocks, games room etc. By the look of some of the gigantic caravans
there, I would say it was permanent residence to more than a few. Big fat gypsy
wedding set in some cases. Most were all actually lovely. We made friends with
2 little girls, aged about 7 who spoke to us in perfect English... they must
have thought we were thick, being so old and unable to speak German at our age!
Adam, the driver, also got chatting to a little lad and let him hoot the
monstrosity of a horn, whilst sitting in the cab. He was such a poppet and was
strutting some awesome red Wellies and matching jacket! As you can probably surmise
from that attire, the weather was not great, nor was the outlook anymore
promising. That evening, washing was done, as the driers were free (such cheap
skates!) and internet was caught up on.
After a
soggy night.... for some a very soggy night in
their tent too... it was time to venture into Austria's capital. It was a short
walk and metro ride to the city centre. We managed to navigate it pretty well,
we were a similar sized party to that we had in Prague, but had gained David as
he seemed to appreciate the haphazard nature of or exploration. On arrival in
the city, water was still falling from the sky, so we went to tourist info,
grabbed as many maps as we could and deliberated on a plan over a deemed
necessary Starbucks! It was decided upon that we would do a DIY walking tour of
the city, as it seemed that rockstar wages were required for the majority of
the tourist traps. This also meant we went very close to a food and beer
festival where Doris - a very dear old friend happened to be working for the
day. The walking tour did what it said on the tin, taking us around a variety
of different cathedral/churches, statues of the great musicians, museums and
memorials. All were incredibly beautiful, as were the architecturally stunning
building which lined the streets in-between . The carvings and stonemasonry on
the colossal sites was incredible, with such precise, intricate
detail on a
tremendous scale. We also posed for a photo infront of the 'Sister Act' theatre
with spectacular style!
The festival, where we went to find Doris, was full of traditional Austrian
fair, lederhosen tastic!! Amazing smelling food and drink. We dressed up for a
hotel photo shoot in dressing gowns and jumped in a wooden tub with an
oversized beaver... sadly we did not make their website, but our own photos of
the situation are classic! I eventually found Doris for a quick catch-up whilst
the others went for lunch. It was so sad to say goodbye to her yet again... but
I will be back to see her! The last thing of the day was the Sigmund Freud
museum, where his consulting room used to be and where Anna, his daughter lived
after his death. Not knowing much about him, at first, it was all a little deep
and odd, but interesting all the same. Some if the girls had done psychology at
uni and therefore found it more engaging. That night I was on cooking duty so
had to return to the campsite by 5pm. We were pretty jammy though on the
cooking front as the tour leader, Polly bought stew ingredients and had had the
pot bubbling for hours that afternoon,
which meant we only had rice to put on
and a 2 person vege pot to cook! Sweeeeet! s cook group you sleep on the
truck, so you don't have to produce breakfast as well as pack away your tent
before departure. After hearing stories of being cramped and cold I was not
looking forward to it, but in fact I slept like a log!! Roasty toasty! Maybe I
am just a person that can sleep anywhere?? Beans on toast cooked, washing up
done and camp packed up, of was on the road again... Hungary here we come!!!!Xx
