Said goodbye to Cesky on Thursday an headed on down to Vienna, or Wein as thez call in here. Met up with crew for another Busabout hostel bar night. Its so hard to remember names, there are so many new people you meet everyday but everyones in the same boat. On Friday had to sort out Romania transport. Kind of got lost in translation here. Am really suprised how little of countries languages you need to know, just a few basic words to be polite and get you started in a conversation. Anyway long story short went to 3 different places around the city that was told to go too, i think, and the whole english/austrian, (even though i can pick up a little german in it from school) thing kicks in when your asking specific questions to get the right answes. Ended up being directed to the train station 2min from the hostel, Spent another hour lining up an getting confused Austrian faces before i got to the right place. You can imagine how frazeled i was by this point and i hadn´t even seen Vienna, or the nice parts anyway.
Got into town where St Stephens Cathedral
St Stephens Catherdral
Really cool faces on the inside lies, a stunning church with mosaic tiled roof. Inside has heaps of gothic architecture with hundreds of little on pillars an walls. It seems like every 50 steps in town you take a person dressed up in period costume approaches you to go an see a concert, the 1st couple are amusing and had a good chat to them, but by the 40th time its the quick walkby. Its such a cafe culture here, its been such hot days here, above 30, an all the seats were full of locals an tourists alike soaking up the sun. The locals here are so nicely dressed, classic style, both men an women looks like alot of metro´😊 emaculate from head to toe, you really feel like a ruff backpacker sitting amungst them. Went for a walk around the main buildings, they´re massive, you get a bit sick of looking at them sometimes.Sat an people watched in Stephensplatz with an icecream, they love they´re icecream over here.
Saturday went out to Schloss Palace where there are massive royal gardens out the back. The Hasburg Dynasty is the big history in Vienna, an they must have had alot of money. A couple of
days from now the gardens are hosting the Concert for Europe, which the Vienna Philharmonic put on every year, so big stage an lots of equipment an trucks spoiling the view a bit, shame wont be here for it, its free. Went into city to see if i could get some cheap tickets for the opera, turns out not the best day to do it, Domingo 1 of the 3 tenors was singing there tonight, tickets were sold out 6 months ago for 400euro, so maybe not this time i think. More mates from last bus arrived tonight an met some other nationalities as well!! Most people on Busabout are Aussies or Canadians an even in the hostels an on the streets, its aussie voices you hear. Notable girl called Sass was on Choir exersion from Germany. QYO had come to her town an she moved to Brisbane with one of its players for a while, wasn´t Shanes trip, funny what stories you tell.
Sunday went into town to the Hosburg and went inside. There is an exhibition about Sissi, really interesting life of a Hosburg royal, will be reading up on her when i get back. Also went ot the Haus der Musik which ws such a good decision. It had exhibitions on Mahler an Motzart ect but had heaps of interactive exhibits that were on sound travel an digital enhancement so spent a few hours in there.
PS - In Stephansplatz a lot of street performers are on show, but the most diverse Ive ever seen; a puppeteer man with a show, a lady playing a full grand piano on wheels, hip hop street dancers doing amazing things, Hurrie Christianers doing there thing; a diablo man, an the best, on Sunday morning about 30 Austrians dressed up in shorts an braces doing traditional couple dancing. So cool to have seen that, got a bit of video but so many different dances that many locals must know as many of them joined in. Also that day herd the organ an choir sing in St Stephans for a service, such overpowering accoustics in there.
Today am just having a lazy one, could have done this city in a lot less time I think. Specially coming from Cesky its full on and all the buildings seem to mould into one sometimes. Get on a night train tonight to Brasov, Romania, the heart of Transylvania so am really looking forward to that. From classical to Dracula, can you get anymore diverse!
