just a huge stone wall. what they told people was the only way out was through the chimney. :(
This week we were taken to a concentration camp. I learned so much that I didn't know before. Mauthausen is about 30 minutes away from the university and was the central concentration camp in Austria. There were 50 other concentration camps in Austria but this was the main one and the biggest one at the time. It was a work camp instead of the other 11 types of camp. The people that went there had to work in the quarry or were sent to other places like factories in town to work. If they weren't healthy enough to work then they were killed because they were useless to the system. This camp was huge and it was on top of the hill and the whole thing is just so complex and it's crazy that someone actually sat down and planned out this complex system that when you think about it makes sense. It supplied labor and also created jobs and the ability to go to school for those that were guards. Still doesn't make it right but it's unbelievable how everything was planned out.
Anyways, we put our sad faces on and took a tour.

the walk of deaththe walk of death
the walk of death

that's meg making a sad face as she walks down the pathway called the walk of death. it was really horrible to walk on and the stones were really jagged. it led down to the quarry
steps steps stepssteps steps steps
steps steps steps

there were probably, no lie, a thousand steps after the walk of death path that went down to the quarry. i definitely would not want to do that everyday.
