Today would be one of the “less good” days of the trip. It's not that we had a bad time. Au contraire. It was just that a couple of annoying issues happened along the way. In the end things righted themselves but they put a damper on our day. The day started off with the clanging of the bell in the tiny village church at sunrise. I apparently fell back asleep rather quickly because we didn... Read Full Entry

We had picked a pretty lousy day to come to Hallstatt but overall we had great weather throughout the trip. The rain held off for most of the time we were there and it was much warmer than our previous visit in February 2015.

I was getting the impression that China loves Hallstatt. It seems all the tourists from there were as bad as my wife taking pictures from every angle with the charming little town as a backdrop. The difference was that Chinese document their travels with photos of themselves in front of all the tourist sites while Gail spares the viewer from having to look at us in her documentary.

By now things were returning to a slower more even pace in Hallstatt. Most of the buses were gone and traffic disappeared on the main road into town.

The walk back to the parked car took forever as my wife stopped to take pictures of all the flowers, fountains, garden gnomes and backyards on the road out of Hallstatt.

Another great thing about Europe is the way they let you know just where available parking lots are located and how many spaces are vacant. Of course, when we drove in earlier they lied about there being 4 empties in the closest lot.

This was a different version of the typical onion domes found on churches in this area of Austria and Germany. This sat on top of a memorial outside Hallstatt.

On our way back out of town we passed this luxury bus resting in a distant parking lot. I'd love to know if there was an electrical short or if some nimrod ignored the now-smoking signs. In any case, this bus was gutted.

With our route taking us through numerous tiny towns on our way to Maria Gern we passed many an interesting building each with its own unique history. Too bad my German isn't better because I'd love to learn more as we pass through.

I worry for the future of all these brilliant old churches as religion seems to be dying throughout Europe.

As we head into the home stretch of our two week vacation I booked us three nights in the Berchtesgaden/Salzburg area. This is my favorite place in the world because of the natural landscape and the plenitude of things to see and do in such a small geographical area.

Not bad on a cloudy evening as the sun sets, but it would get even more amazing later in the trip. We had no idea just how awesome this little inn would turn out to be.
