Today will be a short blog as we are having a day of rest and relaxation in the Tirol. We have been invited for lunch at Anne’s in Seefeld. Seefeld is approximately 30 minutes from Axams and I love the drive there as we drive down into the Inn Valley and up Zirler Berg on the other side. It is dramatic scenery all the way. Anne has been another close friend since the early 1980s when I spent three years living and working in Seefeld. I have spent many weeks over the past years at her home - either using one of her apartments for a skiing holiday or dog-sitting for the lovely Rory occasionally when she went on one of her exotic and exciting trips. Needless to say I am really excited about returning to Seefeld. I loved my time there and I have countless fantastic memories. I always enjoy returning - whether to ski or to visit friends.
We arrive in the morning so we can have a walk through the town centre and round the lake before we head up to Anne’s. There have been lots of changes in the village and it all looks
rather modern. Inevitably we see a number of people that we know between us and stop for a number of chats. After passing through the town centre we head up the hill behind the church where we get lovely views of both the Gschwandtkopf and Rosshütte areas. I have seen these many more times in the winter than in the summer, so they look slightly odd - being green rather than white!
As we wander round the lake Sue points out something new (for me anyway - apparently it has been there over ten years!) It is the Kneipp spa water therapy at the Wildsee, currently being enjoyed by a group of noisy Italians. These Kneipp facilities apparently offer revitalisation and enhanced well-being. Kneipp water therapy is supposed to boost the immune system, harmonise the nervous system and provide a balancing effect on breathing, heartbeat, circulation and digestion. Apparently the healing powers of water have been recognised for centuries. Water therapy is supposed to activate body, mind and soul. Equipped with clear information boards to ensure the correct use of the facilities, the Kneipp water therapy area at the Wildsee is supposed to offer an invigorating outdoor
spa experience for all the senses. Rather sceptical of all this I watch Sue stick her arms and elbows in the water. She says she feels genuinely great afterwards, so I do it too. And I feel great as well!! So I also take my trainers and socks off and go the whole hog and walk round the (freezing) therapy pool, lifting my feet fully out of the water as Sue tells me this is the correct way to do it. I do wonder at this point why Sue hasn’t joined me in the water. What does she know that I don’t??!! Soon the Italians are copying what I am doing - they seem to think I know what I am doing. When I get out of the water I am amazed to find that I do feel rather revitalised. We continue our walk round the lake now - me fully revitalised and Sue only half revitalised. But at least her feet are probably properly dry!!
From here we go to Anne’s, where we have a lovely lunch with Prosecco on her terrace. Marilyn arrives and joins us for lunch, and soon we are also joined by
Anne’s son, Alexander, his partner, Julia and their six year-old son, Liam. I have known Alexander since he was a small boy. My abiding memory of him will always be in a blue snowsuit, waiting at the the bottom of the toboggan run (a weekly fun excursion we did in winter with guests) - a pile of snowballs at the ready, a massive grin and a wicked glint in his eye!! Lunch morphs into coffee and cake and a lovely reminisce for hours. Anne produces masses of old photos from my time in Seefeld and earlier.
Sue and I return later to Axams and sit on her terrace (a theme is emerging here!) - chatting well into the night, drinking red wine and eating takeaway pizza from Pizza Pizza. This is conveniently located less than five mins walk from Sue’s home. Another wonderful Tirol day - great friends, lovely scenery and good food, wine and coffee.
