So, currently I am sitting in an internet cafe in Salzburg. I actually had to look over at Steph for a sec and pause: 'Where are we again??' It's definitely starting to get that way as we jump from city to city, but the trip is getting nothing but better, and the adventures continue.
It has also begun to warm up which is definitely a relief. I basically packed clothes for mediterranean beach weather, and a Vancouver spring, which is what I assumed the first half of our trip was going to be. I have been very much wrong so far. Amsterdam was freezing. We've experienced hail storms twice, once in Amsterdam and once in Berlin, and have endured many nights of freezing cold rain. So if it looks like we're wearing the same clothes in all of our pictures, big surprise, it's because we are. Blah. It is getting progressively warmer though, and today (gasp) I wandered around town in a t-shirt, rather than my normal sweatshirt/jacket 4 layer combo...shocking.
But back to the interesting stuff...
The past two days we spent in Munich were fabulous. The Germans, to our surprise, have actually been our favorite people
Day Trip to Fussen
Steph swallows her fear of heights as we pose overlooking the castle in the mountains of Germany. so far. We were warned that they can be really cold, but we've found them extremely warm and helpful, and overall, amazingly fun.
Our train ride to Munich was long...7 hours ew, but thankfully smoke free. We did however learn a fun new lesson. Honestly it feels like every time we take a train we learn some new and unfortunate lesson. Past lessons include: double check where you're going (refer to Amsterdam incident from first entry haha), request non-smoking cars (gasp...seriously we all got sick after that train), and many other small but important things. Lesson we learned on the way to Munich: always pay the extra money on long train rides to reserve seats. We honestly had to change seats at least 6 times because people kept boarding at different stops, and we were of course always in someone else's spot. In the end we made it to Munich no problem though...just one more lesson to remember for next time.
Munich is gorgeous, and much older feeling than Berlin. Apparently the Nazis took advantage of new technology of the time and took lots of colour photos of the city, therefore after the war it was quite easy
Making New Friends Everywhere We Go
Russian math professor??? Also note that we have nicknamed ourselves team brown, as everytime we go out we wear the same shirt to limit dirt and smoke smell haha. to rebuild the city to the way it had been before. We did another free walking tour (so awesome) so we got to see many of the main sites, which was great since we really only had two days. Our first day we did a day-trip 2 hours out of Munich to the small town of Fussen, which is home to the castle that the disneyland logo was based upon. It was as expected, totally gorgeous and picturesque. The story is actually pretty weird, as it was built by the king of Bavaria in the late 19th century, after he'd turned a little nutty. He basically went on a castle building spree, then before most were completed, was deemed unfit to rule and sent to an insane asylum, where he drowned shortly after his arrival, under very suspicous circumstances. My guess = too much inbreeding. Seriously these old royal familes are messed up. The castle however was fabulous, but it seems like a bit of a waste since he only lived in the place for about 170 days. Talk about excess.
My absolute favorite part of Munich was our visit to Hofbrauhaus...the biggest beer hall in the world. It
Towering Over Salzburg
Enjoy our first day of sun in the Austrian Alps. has basically stolen Disneyland's motto in my mind, as the happiest place on earth. Seriously we had the best time. It's filled with people of all ages, drinking beer from 1 litre glasses, and dancing to goofy tunes played by old men in leiderhosen (sp?). You really can't get much better than that. We befriended a group of travelling Russian professors (what the heck) and had way too much fun. Seriously...I love Germany.
Salzburg has been gorgeous so far, and cheap, but that's more to do with the fact that there's not much to do here. The city is surprisingly quiet at night, then during the day it turns into your average european town full of tourists. We did a mini-hike up to a 15th century fortress today which was pretty neat, it also gave us a chance to enjoy some great views from above the city.
Tonight we're off to the Augustiner, the biggest beer hall in Austria, so if it's anything like the Hofbrauhaus, then we should be in for a good time.
Proste!!
xo,
Julia
