Horse-drawn carriages
Karina says hello to a couple of horses This morning we woke to get an early start on the day (and I wanted eggs for breakfast today - I missed out on them yesterday). My foot felt the same as yesterday, which wasn't encouraging.
The plan was for me to stay in our room until checkout at 11:30am, and then catch the bus into the city to meet Karina, then we'd come back at 4pm to collect our bags and catch the train to Vienna. However, after speaking to the owner on the way out, Karina returned to tell me that I could stay in the room until 4pm when we had to leave! That made things a lot easier.
After Karina left I caught up on some much needed sleep for a few hours. I then hobbled down the road to get some lunch at a kebab shop. The shopkeeper couldn't speak a word of English, so that was interesting. But I somehow managed to order a kebab on a pita with lettuce, "kase" (cheese, I knew that one) and chilli flakes (they don't appear to have chilli sauce). He asked where I was from, and joked about me ordering a "Kangaroo kebab". Hmm... anyway, the
Hike up the hill
Another stop along the trail kebab tasted OK.
I hobbled back and ate lunch while researching stuff for us to do in Vienna. I managed to book a tour of the Spanish Riding School for Sunday, much to Karina's delight. As for the other 2 days, there's a few possibilities that look interesting, depending on my foot. I also managed to update my blogs and add photos to some recent entries.
Karina returned shortly after 3pm, bearing a couple of shopping bags. She did actually do some sightseeing as well (so she claims) but she did have some photographic evidence to back it up! 😉 From the photos it looks like I missed out on a fun day - damn it! She did a fair amount of walking/hiking - a lot of it up-hill - to get some impressive views overlooking the Salzburg city centre. Not to mention the 30 photos she took of the horse-drawn carriages in Mozartplatz.
We packed up and caught the bus into the city and again to the train station, arriving some 2hrs before it was due to depart. And so we sat and waited and watched people coming and going before Karina scouted out potential sources
Scary Statue
A rather scary statue Karina encountered on her hike above the city of dinner. One thing that particularly struck me - there was a very distinct lack of fat people in Salzburg!!! Seriously, in the time I sat there and saw hundreds and hundreds of people pass me by, only a handful were fat!!! And I'm betting half of those were tourists!!! Weird!
Karina brought back a lasagna to share, which I must say was pretty ordinary. I'm writing this blog on train about 1hr out of Vienna after we took it in turns to watch a few episodes of KOQ as the train is too loud to hear properly through only one earphone. Not quite as nice as the ride to Salzburg where we had our own 6-seat compartment, but at least the seats are comfortable.
As for my foot - it has definitely improved today. I tried to keep off it as much as possible today, and have been over-compensating for it this afternoon when I do have to walk. Hopefully by tomorrow or at worst, the next day, I'll be able to walk on it properly. It certainly has been frustrating for both of us, especially considering we still have more than 5 weeks of walking ahead
Fortress fom the trail
A view of the fortress overlooking the city from a vantage point on the trail of us!
