This is the day!! Breakfast at 6, on the bus at 6:30, on the boat at 6:45! We were to have our luggage outside our door by 11:30 the night before to be picked up by the bellboy and loaded on the bus to be driven to Colon, where we'll exit the boat. Culebra Cut

The Culebra Cut is where the French failed. The were trying to build a sea-level canal which meant they'd have to dig down at lease 85' across the country. Turns out, this part of the country is basalt, incredibly hard. Many men died working on this portion of the Canal, often from TNT that blew up 'early'.

The terraces are to discourage mud slides which continue at times. Part of the ongoing work is cleaning silt out of the canal and keeping the depth they need.
