At 7pm on Tuesday 22nd November, after 10 hours spent waiting for our paperwork to be stamped by one official, signed by another who would be "back in 10 minutes", witnessed by someone who was currently away on vacation, signed by someone else, and finally copied, stamped and returned by the official head of the Officious Officials only in the minutes between 3:23pm and 3:27pm whilst both reciting 'the Officious Officials Official Statute' and smoking a ceremonial pipe, our high seas adventure began. Those present were yours truly, Jessie (see previous blog entry), Johannes (a German), Drew (an American), Andre (another American), Captain Hernando (aka El Capitan and 'that massive pain in the arse' by the end of the journey) and our trusty stead, 'Marie-Jo' (a 31 foot sailing boat). The skies that had been shedding ... read more

The trip to the San Blas is pretty uneventful. Most of the time we have light SW winds, yup right on the bow. Everyone swears this is unusual for this area, but I'm starting to think its just me. We did get about 6 hours of really fun sailing in about 15-20 knots winds on a close reach (I'm sure that term means something to someone) Of course all of this happens while I'm not on watch and am trying to sleep on the left side of the boat while its heeled over on its right side...(read, I keep falling out of bed). Bing I hope you appreciate the incorrect use of right and left, that is just for you. So what are the San Blas islands. They are an archipelago of islands off the SE ... read more

The following two days we went to other islands, going through some of the most beautiful landscapes I had seen. Islands with indian huts, the ocean so transparent that one could see the coral reefs at the bottom and green mountains on our right side. We had meals cooked by the locals, fresh lobster and fish. Phil was making the best of his British humor, Ross and Greg were reading most of the time, Paul was snorkling (he agreed to snorkle the way between two islands, but it turned out being a lot farther than he had thought), Eva was looking cute and Sjoerd was sleeping. Sjoerd was sick and slept most of the time during the 5 days. After three days in paradise we left for Cartagena, which was only 200 miles away. On the ... read more

I know I'm more than 10 days late, but there is too much to talk about and too little time left before I have to be in Brazil, so please be patient. For a quick update: I'm still in Colombia and I'm loving it. I just finished a diving course at Tayrona National Park, area controlled by the paramilitary, so it's pretty safe for turists. I'm heading to Venezuela tomorrow. First day on boat: The group on the boat was composed of the capitan, Hernando Higuera, five of guys from the hostel, myself and a Dutch girl that we were going to meet in El Porvenir, where the boat was going to leave from. Some gender imbalance there? You can add that the boat is 33 feet in length and smaller than my kitchen in Oakland ... read more

Well, IM BACK! Weeee!! Such a nice relaxing weekend. I flew out early in the morning from Panama on Friday. Three others from the hostel I was staying at were going for the weekend as well, but it was a surprize for one of the girls birthday from her boyfriend. So even as we flew in the plane she still had no idea where in the heck we were going, but what a nice surprize! I ended up staying at a hotel called Hotel San Blas on an inhibited island. Everyday we would all get up and have tea and coffie for breakfast, maybe some eggs, and then get in the boat and take a 40 min ride to some little uninhibited islands. So dang beautiful. The first day we went to an island called Dog ... read more

If there is a more beautiful place on earth than the island I holed up on for 5 days, I would be amazed to find it. Every morning I awoke to the sounds of the waves on the shore and the wind in the coconut palms; as I stepped out of the cabaƱa, my eyes feasted on the thousand shades of turquoise, green, and blue and at night the whole island was blanketed in the brightest moonlight I have ever seen. Never have I seen so many stars in the sky! It was absolutely incredible. After going out to a wonderful little Cuban bar called Bolero on Saturday night, I left with Ita at 4 am to the airport to try to get a ticket to San Blas on standby. The flight left at 6 am ... read more
