Trying to find the crater lake; the view from the top was even worse. Revolting Volcanoes - by George
Actually that should read revolutions and volcanoes, but I prefer my version.
After our spell in Granada we headed to Lake Nicaragua, home to Isla de Ometepe and its two volcanoes. For those interested in facts and figures, here you go:
• Lake Nicaragua is the largest lake in Central America
• The lake is home to the Freshwater Bull Shark
• The name derives from the Nahuatl, ome tepetl, meaning two mountains
• I was told that Ometepe is the largest island within a lake in the World, but can't find evidence to support this
We had a rather belated and boozy engagement celebration courtesy of Roz and enjoyed chilling out on the beach for a couple of days. The only blip of our stay being a pointless eight-hour hike up and down Volcan Madera, with no views, a guide who was scared of his own voice and the most measly lunch ever provided on a tour - two slices of bread and a sliver of American cheese.
It wasn't time to settle down, so off to Léon we went humming Maybe Tomorrow, the theme to the Littlest Hobo...
Celebratory Dinner
Roz, Kate and me celebrating the engagement in style! Our last stop in Nicaragua was the former capital, Léon. Determined to avoid any volcanoes for at least a couple of days we decided to learn a bit about the 1978-1979 revolution, in which Léon was central. Sadly our Spanish was not quite up to the tour, but we enjoyed the photos, learnt a little and got to stand on the roof for an amazing view.
Next stop Honduras, with the promise of diving on the Bay Islands. Thank you Nicaragua, we had a lot of fun visiting you.
