The Volcano The Volcano The Volcano

This volcano is just outside the city of Antigua. This view is from the rooftop where I am staying
We are heading to Panachel today, by Lago Atitlan which is ringed by a range of volcanoes. It should be quite beautiful.

Antigua is a nice city. Unfortunately it is more expensive than anywhere else in Guatemala. Still keeping a good budget though. I have been in the country since Monday and I have spent around $60. Including renting a scooter for three hours yesterday.

Although it seems safe enough we did hear about somebody getting robbed three days ago and the President's wife is in town. It can never be good to be near politicians in third world countries. We heard so many horror stories about Guatemala before we came here and at this point we have not really seen to much scary stuff. Sure armed robbers tried to rob a hotel in town yesterday and there are shotguns and machetes everywhere, but everybody seems friendly enough.

It is always more fun to head out of the tourist district. We took the scooters all the way out of the city and we wound up in a totally Guatemalan barrio. You can tell no other tourists go there because the locals look at us like we have three

We took our scooter way far into the rural areas and this is what we found
heads. These are the true experiences of traveling in foreign countries. After we left the barrios we continued up into the mountains and did some off road scootering. We were riding through this tiny dirt path in the middle of a corn field. It was great. We came upon some farmers and they let us take some pictures.

I am not sure whether they allow us to bring coffee beans on the plane back into the US, but I am damn sure going to try. So Dad, hopefully you will be getting a nice care package of Guatemalan coffee. Anyways that all for now.
