We spent a month in Cuba; took several side trips and rented a car for 4 days to explore the region west of Havana. My impression is that Cuba is beginning a "quiet revolution;" farmers, fishermen and small time businessmen are getting some opportunities to experiment with free enterprise. The black market rules. Everything "falls off the back of a truck" if you know where to look. There are 2 currencies. The tourist CUC is worth roughly $1... the 4 of us wilted one afternoon and headed to the air conditioned state run marina restaurant....8 beers and 2 Cuba Libres later the bill came to 12 CUC. The Cubans use "nationals"....24 to the CUC...a dozen bananas in a farmers' market cost 5n or 20 cents. Beggars and touts are a nusiance at tourist sites (such as ... read more

After several frustrating seasons where weather, health or other circumstances prevented us from making a real ocean crossing to another country....this year we finally made the jump to Cuba, and back! There is no simple way to describe the experience. The outbound crossing was extremely challenging for us. Wind and wave conditions exceeded predictions considerably...despite checking 3 different sources for weather they all proved to be wrong. The 108 nautical mile crossing took us 24 hours, most of it hand steered as our auto pilot was overwhelmed by the size and strength of the waves (we found a clump of seaweed on top of our dodger when we were cleaning up the day after arrival.) But we made it and were glad to have achieved a "bucket list" goal. Our buddy boat, Lorbas, with Rick & ... read more

April 10Met David for our old Havana (Havana Vieja) walking tour, we had saved the best part of Havana till last - lots of grand old buildings from the days when Cuba was wealthy, and amazing architecture. After the tour, we said farewell to Gabrielle :-( then the girls had liqueur coffee and cake at La Escorial cafe in the plaza, while the boys went to the Boutique Brewery opposite! (not Scarlett and Nathan of course!). Went up to the Camera Obscura, which gives a live 360 birds eye view of the city, complete with a hilarious commentary! Did a bit of souvenir shopping along the pedestrian mall, then wandered up to Parque Central for a snack. Rained heavily early evening, just when we were heading out for our final group dinner, it was a traditional Cuban ... read more

April 6 Happy birthday to me! Carmen our host gave me a Cuba key ring and there was a card from the Beatons, after breakfast it was off to Baracoa, our last day in the bus with Ivan. We stopped at Guantanamo for coffee then it was a scenic drive to Baracoa over a big mountain range, 5 hours drive all up. After checking into our casa with Miriam and family about 2, we set off on an orientation tour by local van, which turned out to be a surprise birthday BBQ for me!! Wow! The van arrived at a lovely river, where there was a roast suckling pig on a spit and a small group of musicians singing happy birthday! Lunch was amazing, pork, black bean dish, rice, salad, plantain chips and bread, served in ... read more

April 2 Was about a 4 hour run through to Camaguey, where we were staying in a hotel for a change. Usual orientation walk after lunch then coffee in the square with our group. Ordering coffee can be interesting in different countries, what you get can be totally different to what you think you order! Here a latte was a small cup of black coffee! Blu and I needed to find an ATM, this proved to be another Cuban experience, when we finally found one, we had to wait in line for over half an hour! Stuff we take for granted at home is not here, no Wifi, ATMs only in large cities, and to use the Internet you go to a government agency and show your passport before you can buy a card to use the ... read more

March 30 Left about 9 for Trinidad via Santa Clara, where we visited the Che Guevera museum, memorial and burial place, very interesting and most important to Cuban people. Che and the Castro brothers are national icons and everywhere you go there are photos, posters and signs about them and "Vive la Revolucion"! There are statues and monuments all over Cuba to other heroes of the revolution, such as Jose Marti, Camilo Cienfuegos and Frank Pais, and streets across Cuba are named for them. It was a beautiful but very steep and windy drive through to Trinidad across the mountains and down through the national park. Got to Trinidad in the early afternoon and our group went off to different home stays (casas) for the next 3 nights. We stayed with Eugenia and Nancy, who were ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba March 30th 2013

March 27 We were both excited, but especially Blu, about going to Cuba. Caught the Isla Mujeres ferry across to the mainland and then a bus to Cancun airport. we were surprised to find the flight time to Havana was only 45 minutes, it is so close to both Mexico and Florida, but we went forward 2 hours in time which was a bit confusing. It took about an hour to get our bags at Havana airport, but we finally arrived at the Hotel Nacional which was rather grand. It was "the" hotel in pre-revolution Cuba, and many famous people stayed there in the 50s and 60s, their photos adorn the walls as proof. Built in the 1930s, it is a national icon. Our room was like an old American style hotel. Not our usual budget ... read more

Let me just preface this with the fact that I felt pretty horrible the entire time I was away (started before I left and didn’t have anything to do with the food or anything)… I also didn’t have a single drink the entire time I was there (see point #1). So with that in mind, here we go... Cuba - take one. So I’m trying a different kind of adventure this time around… first go at an all-inclusive and my first time in Cuba. Direct to Cuba flights from my city don’t start until the week after spring break (wtf?), so I drove to Moncton to meet up with the girls. Sunwing flight was delayed about three hours, but I knew that before I even left for Moncton. No big deal. Hung out with the girls, ... read more

Breakfast at Dady's was pretty good. The usual Cuban breakfast included an egg omlette and some meat or fruit. At Dady's we had omelette with plates of bread, cheese, ham, coffee and fresh juice. As majority of us wanted to go to Playa Ancon Tony arranged for Ricardo to drive us there on the bus and come back for us later that afternoon. We just paid a few $CUC each to cover it. My first time in the Caribbean Ocean – just a little bit excited. The beach was really pretty, the water a nice colour and my favourite part – warm enough for someone wimpy like me to swim in. We set ourselves up on the beach and spent the day swimming, reading, tanning, burning etc. There was a bar on the beach making cocktails ... read more

Departure day. We were lucky because we had a full group we had our own bus to take us all the way through to Baracoa which was really nice because we stayed with the same driver, were able to spread out on the bus and also leave belongings we didn't need on there. We were supposed to go to the Che Memorial at Santa Clara today however Tony realised it would not be open so as a group we decided that tomorrow we would backtrack to the memorial from Cienfuegos before continuing onto Trinidad. Tony arranged for us to have a walking tour of old Havana as there was more to do and see in the area than in Cienfuegos. Saw much of the same stuff as yesterday but the group was a lot smaller and ... read more
