Just as the boys had always wished for, we woke up early Thursday morning to ride on the school bus to check out yet another school. The great thing about the change in plans is that we are really seeing a wide spectrum of what is available to students in Costa Rica. Saint Patrick’s American School is definitely different than Sancti Spiritus, yet, still with a Costa Rican touch. It is a smaller school, serving Pre-School age 3 to Grade 6. Students arrive and have homeroom from 7:45 to 8:00. It is much more calm and organized with the students going to their classrooms and being greeted by their teachers every morning. After homeroom, classes begin at 8 am, with preschool finishing at noon and the other classes ending at 3:00 followed by a ten minute ... read more

Nataghia has always said that I’m a good judge of character and that I can assess a situation with both speed and accuracy. Actually it is something that annoys her on those occasions when I tell her I’ve made judgment about someone or something she likes and I disagree. Nataghia’s day didn’t go any better than my first day and for the remainder of the week things never got any better. No supplies, no books, no students until fifteen minutes past the bell every morning. Changing schedules, very distracted and inattentive students and complete chaos seem to be the norm. Actually by Thursday I was getting into the groove of things and was starting to get somewhat comfortable. On Friday I was having a great day teaching. The morning was pretty good and the afternoon was ... read more

As I mentioned in the last journal the house we were hoping to secure fell through and we found a temporary fix in a nearby apartment/hotel. Not real cheap compared to renting a house but at $16 a night it isn’t going to break the bank either. It would be nice if it had a stove but it is a roof over our head and it has a fridge, microwave, and a pool. We were offered a fully furnished three bedroom home with all the necessities; fridge, stove, dishes, pots, pans, security, ... read more

OK, I know after you read the next few sentences you might think I’m making this stuff up, but here goes. When we got off the bus from Playa Flamingo to Alajuela it was raining. Nothing unusual as it seems to rain every afternoon there. However, as we get out of the taxi at Vida Tropical I’m thinking to myself, “Man, is it ever cold.” As we drag our bags in Owen looks at me and says, “Dad, I’m freezing.” I agree and Nataghia looks at both of us like we’re crazy. Once we settle back into our room at Vida Tropical, we got the fish room this time and to the delight of the boys it has a functioning television. I went online to listen to the game and my accuweather update pops up and ... read more
