Dinner
Melvin brought these fish home one night and they were very delicious! I haven't written anything for several days since there is so much going on. We do lots of things during the day and then do our night shift with walking the beach. Mostly, I have been taking the late shift at 12 midnight untill 4 and it is quite tiring since no matter what, I never catch up on my sleep during the day. Hopefully I can take a nice siesta today since it is cloudy and has already rained some today.
Here at the house of Teresa and Melvin there has been a lot going on. The family's two boys are expected home for the weekend (Andi and Roy). Then Melvin's father, who lives next door had severe breathing problems and was rushed with Melvin to the nearest hospital in Siquirres. He was quite bad and ended up in a bigger hospital in Limon. Teresa was quite upset for her father-in-law and for Melvin. But then she got word that he was doing better with either a respirator or breathing treatments (he has asthma and smokes). Melvin's father-in-law is Maximillion and he is a Hatchery Guard (most of the old guys in town take some shift at the hatchery
The Castilla
This is called the Castilla or the Leatherback Shack. All the volunteers and guides meet here for their shifts. and there is always someone there. "Santoin" the family dog often is there with Maximillion.
Last night was the hardest night for me walking the beach. The boys arrived here and all their friends were here visiting with them. I tried to go to bed at 7 pm but there were so many people in the house that I didn't get much rest. I awoke at 10:45 pm and wanted to see the dance that was going on at the bar. The people here like Reggae and Soka (sp?) which I wanted to see. I went to the bar at 11 pm and was watching but could not see anyhing special with this "Soka". Kind of haphazard dancing to me -- I like the salsa, merenge and other latin dances better. Even the Cumbia i learned in Orosi was superior to Soka. Maybe the people of Parismina are not so adventurous or industrious with their dancing. Certainly, the heat takes so much out of a person, that I can understand why.
Last night I walked in sector two with Jason which was good. We released at least 150 baby turtles until 1:30am. Then we started walking the beach.
The Beach
Here is the beach at Parismina. The tides here don't seem to be as strong as the Pacific or in areas south along the coast of Costa Rica We came across a Leatherback camaflouaging her nest. We poked sticks in the ground looking for soft sand where she placed her eggs but found none. Jason thought he saw footprints away from the area and we cannot be sure if she indeed laid eggs and if so, if someone took them. We went to the end of the zone and returned to the samw area and again found no eggs.
These turtles are so large and impressive. It is just amazing to see them but it is even better to be working with the eggs and hoping to put out more babies so that the species is around in 15-20 years when the babies will be ready to lay their eggs for another generation.
Today the family here is cooking outside in a kitchen they have there. They are making food to sell at the soccer championship between 4 different small villages. This championship is for the girls. Later there will be other men's games.
Tim was too tired to walk last night and now he is rested from one whole night of sleep. I am dragging from my lack of sleep. The good thing is
Tim on the Beach
We walked the route during the day that we had walked the night before. There are so many things that are not obvious at night. that the day is cool and I hope with my earplugs I can nap when everyone is at the championship games.
