So, the next installment of our busy week… As I mentioned in a caption of a picture of the last blog, we did have an impromptu Super Bowl Party - complete with nachos, pizza and beer - and we were lucky to have beer. This is something I should have included in our Election Day Episode: For 3 days leading up to and including Election Day, alcohol sales are not permitted anywhere in the country. That’s right - from Friday morning (well, really from midnight Thursday night) to midnight Sunday night, no alcohol sales. At the supermarkets the liquor shelves are covered with sheets of plastic and refrigerated case doors are closed with government seals. Most bars just stay closed. Of course Costa Ricans know all about this and stock up ahead of time. We didn’t ... read more

Boy, have we had a busy week! It is now 8:45 Friday night and everyone is in bed but me, poor, old blogger. (I know, I know - when you were young, you used to have to stay up to midnight writing your blogs, and in the snow, and barefoot, oy vey… kids these days.) By the time I am done with this and I upload pictures over our slow connection, it probably will be midnight. And I’ll be the guest picture putter-inner and captioner since I don’t want to bother Dara. I know I said in the past that I would try to add more insight and less travel-log (we did this, then we did this, then… blah, blah, blah) but it is tough - there’s been a lot going on and we want to ... read more

One week down and moving into the second... After the first day of school, Ari said, “One day was enough. I don’t want to go back.” Now after a week is done, I think he really likes it (although we don’t get more than an “it’s ok” out of him, you can tell that he does). He comes home dirty (from playing at recess) and smiling everyday. The other night at dinner he said, “There are some things that are better , some things that are worse and some things that are just different.” The things that are better are what you’d expect - 2 recesses per day, gym twice per week (instead of once), ½ day every Wednesday. Things that are just different - here they provide snacks and lunch for everyone every day; in ... read more

Ari’s first day of school is tomorrow (well, today by the time you read this - or maybe even yesterday, last week or last month). We are all very excited. Since his teachers were on strike when we left Yardley, he hasn’t had a real day of school since October 21 (well, there was that one day he went back and visited after Thanksgiving). I think Ari is nervous and excited - although he is being very calm and cool about the whole thing. We will see how he is in the morning. I can’t wait for him to meet some more kids his age and get back into the school routine. I know he will enjoy the school. We decided to send him to the European School - the school we saw on the second ... read more

So, I thought I’d try my hand at writing a journal entry since Mark relinquished his “adventuring” responsibilities last week while he spent a week back in the US for work. This is Dara. How did the rest of the family hold up in Costa Rica with my improving, but still very limited, Spanish skills? Well, pretty well (if I do say so myself). The biggest mistake I’ve made so far has been asking for a bathroom (servicio) when I really wanted a beer (cerveza)…a little embarrassing, but that was a long time ago already (at least 4 or 5 weeks anyway!) So while Mark was away, the kids and I entertained ourselves by going to the park and blowing bubbles and chasing pigeons (the kids did the chasing), taking art class (just the kids), doing ... read more

In reviewing this blog before publishing it, I realize that the blogs have become much more travel log and much less “blog.” Well, frankly, we’ve been busy and I really want to share with everyone all our interesting and funny (at least they seem that way to us) adventures. If anyone has any suggestions, questions or if more explanation is needed, please do not hesitate to put it in the comments. The kids will be starting school soon, so I think once that happens, we will get into a routine and hopefully the blogs won’t be so busy. Well, we spent a week at the beach and we had a great time. Most days were spent at the beach and pool - bouncing back and forth between the two. We found the beach was best early ... read more

Hola. Finally, I had the chance to see the beautiful side of Costa Rica. The school I am at, Centro Panamericano de Idiomas ( CPI), offers many excursions to places in Costa Rica. This week I took a 'jungle cruise' to Sarapiqui. After an 1 hour and 1/2 ride on what is one of the main roads from Puerto Limon, a road that would be deemed impassable in my neck of the woods, we arrived at a swift flowing green and brown colored river. Boat safety? I think not. No life preservers were offered nor none in evidence. I felt better when the guide told us the river at present was only a meter deep. I felt worse when she told us that it is also full of crocodiles. I'm sure my nice tender and meaty ... read more

Well, things have been pretty slow since we’ve moved in - school for the kids doesn’t start until Jan 30 or later, depending on what school we choose. So most days have been Dara’s homeschool in the mornings followed by an outing to the playground or errands around town in the afternoon. The kids have really been great. Remember those old family vacations when you were young - a week or two on the road with no one but your sister to play with (or no one but your brother - if you have more than one brother or sister or if you never took a family vacation, try to imagine what it would be like) and having to share a room with her? Well, that is what it has been like for the past month ... read more

Ever wonder what is out past where the road ends? Well, that is where we spent Christmas weekend. If you look on a map of Costa Rica, in the northern part of the country near Nicaragua from the middle of country out to the Caribbean there is a big area that has no roads. This area is called Las Llanuras or the plains. As the name implies, it is relatively flat and a high water table makes any low spots swampy. It is banana, pineapple and cow country. It took us about 4 hours to get there - 2 hours to get 90% of the distance (along the main roads that run NW-SE along the northern side of the central range of mountains) to Puerto Viejo de Saripiqui, and then 2 hours to go about 15 ... read more

hola friends and family! i am currently sitting in an internet café in the heart of san Joaquin de flores, heredia, a very tranquil and beautiful provincial town about 15 km outside the nations capital of San Jose. The province of Heredia is located in the central valley of coast rica and home to the volcan poas, rain forests, waterfalls, coffee fincas (farms), and the rio orosi. San Joaquin is considered a middle class to affluent area, with the authentic feel of a provincial costa rican town and has been a wonderful place to kick of my travels. San Joaquin is also home to the CPI Spanish school, where I have been diligently learning my vocab and verbs for the past 5 days from 8-noon each day (NO English at school or at home!) the school ... read more
