It all seems a bit unreal. What began as a feverish discussion between Cheryl and I (who were both hit hard with the flu on Christmas 2010) has suddenly come to pass. Well not so suddenly; there was lots of web-based research and book reading, a "scouting" holiday last march that almost took us to the wrong San Jose (some scout I turned out ot be!), lots of discussions with the kids, visits to Costa Rican schools, talking to expats online, renting and then backing out of a house rental deal when things turned sour, etc, etc. In the meantime, my new solar business was going down the tubes, I found then quit my new job and we were still forging ahead with plans for a major life adventure without even knowing how we were going ... read more

Spent Monday and Tuesday night in Playa Grande. Really the only reason I wanted to go there was to see the nesting leatherback turtles. I knew the surf was too dangerous for the kids to swim in. Unfortunately the hotel messed up our reservation for the turtle tour after I booked it and confirmed it twice, then when we arrived at the hotel Monday night we were fully expecting to go see the turtles but the lady at the hotel said it's booked for tomorrow ... read more

Our first day in Costa Rica! So, the sun comes up at about 5:30, and being an hour behind Chicago time, I'm up at 6 am. But, it reminds me that this is my favorite time of vacation...sitting on the porch, drinking my coffee (pre-programmed the night before), and figuring out (a) how much we've spent so far and (b) what our travel budget is. Rafael from the tour company came by last night, and we've got the majority of our week planned. Today is surfing for the girls in Playa Grande (arranged in advance), but he's sold us on three trips: Monday will be a river cruise to spot wildlife (which appeals to Mike much more than a river rafting trip), Tuesday will be an all-day to Marivalle vocano (including hiking, suspension bridges, mud baths, ... read more
