I don't know why the photos don't seem to come up for this entry. When you click on view full entry if there are no photos you can just go back and click on the photo of sophie eating watermelon and have the option to scroll through the playa grande photos.
Spent Monday and Tuesday night in Playa Grande. Really the only reason I wanted to go there was to see the nesting leatherback turtles. I knew the surf was too dangerous for the kids to swim in. Unfortunately the hotel messed up our reservation for the turtle tour after I booked it and confirmed it twice, then when we arrived at the hotel Monday night we were fully expecting to go see the turtles but the lady at the hotel said it's booked for tomorrow and I could see in her book it was for Tuesday. If she spoke english I would have asked more questions, but my mistake, I didn't. ....
So when we showed up at the national park on Tuesday they had no reservation for us of course because we were booked for Monday. Both nights at 7pm there was a leatherback that we could

our room's terrace was nice . hotel dog have seen, instead we had to wait till the reserved group went out (35 people) and we had to wait for another turtle because they don't let too many on the beach at once. There were about 10-12 people waiting till almost midnight and no turtle. Apparently they used to get 150 turtles per night years ago but now less than 100 per season. Sad.
This was the only hotel that was dirty on our whole trip; right on the beach, room stunk like sewer, the towels were rags that I would not use to mop my floor, all frayed and dirty; the sheets were all old and worn and mismatched and the pillows had to be 25 years old, just gross. The floor was painted black stone which could have been nice except for all the bugs, and don't get me wrong I don't mind a few bugs. Ants and geckos are expected but the floor was crawling with these things like ticks and there were crabs everywhere, plus the ants and geckos and a multitude of large flying things. The bathroom, ohmigod, behind the toilet has never ever seen a mop, and there was a bidet !!!
as if we'd subject our privates to that....yuck. The boys thought it was cool and they used it as a urinal.
Honestly though, if we had just had our turtle tour booked properly, we would have seen a turtle and would not have cared about the room but as it was, playa grande was a bit of a disappointment all around, the beach was beautiful though.
Doug and Sophie played for hours in the surf boogie boarding and it was safe enough as long as you didn't go out too far in the big waves. We also went to playa conchal just a short distance away to see the shell beach.
Harry was out of it, still recovering with an ear infection.
