Hello friends from a somewhat more chilly La Fortuna...
My final days in Delicias-Montezuma, a quick recap....
I wasn´t sure when exactly I would be leaving as I didn´t yet know where I would be heading, earliest leaving date possible was Friday (the 13th...) so my ¨goodbye dinner¨was on Thursday night. There were a couple of people there I had never met before (a regular night at our house then!) and the neighbours had prepared a great lasagna and two big bowls of salad. A great change from the rice and beans regular meals (don´t get me wrong I´m still enjoying those too).
My final day at school on Friday seemed to be over in minutes. It was ¨Agriculture Day¨at the escuela and two people had come to the school to talk about the importance of agriculture in the community to the kids, so not much time for teaching. A quick game of Bingo (a favourite to practice numbers, animals, colours etc) and then once I had gotten my digital camera out to take some pictures of the kids, it was impossible to put my camera away. Everyone wanted their picture taken separately, crazy poses, group pictures. Let´s

On our way over to Monteverde by boat. just say I have plenty of all the students.
After speaking to Lucie on the phone (and being stung by a wasp-like insect whilst doing so) we decided that we would return to Samara for a few days (Lucie already had her bus ticket) until after our Tica Mom´s (Doña Teo) Birthday on Wednesday. And so there we are, back in Samara again. ´Our´ house now has 7 students living there, very fun at dinnertime and for the past two nights (and days, as it´s been raining quite a bit) we´ve been playing a lot of cardgames. Tuesday, fortunately some sun again, and we made sure to take advantage of that by going to the beach, swimming in the sea and spending about 3 hours building a sandcastle and taking silly pictures with the castle afterwards. That night we went to our local bar Las Olas and had a pretty quiet night, that is until the bar closed at around 2.30 am and we were just finishing our game of foosball. Two men who had been a bit rowdy all night started throwing stools, breaking bottles on the floor and swearing a lot at each other. We kind of got caught in between the fight and tried to get out. We hid on the outside dancefloor and waited for them to leave. We saw that one had a knife in his hand. Eventually the fight moved outside, but inside again where they were both getting very badly beaten up. After about 10 minutes we saw one stumbling out clutching hius chest and bleeding from his head. He´d been stabbed about 20 times in the chest and stomach with his own knife which the other guy had gotten hold of. We found out the next day that these were drug dealers that had been in jail for a while, got out but were still in a lot of trouble and that´s why he didn´t want to phone a doctor either. Understandably he is not in great shape...some of the adventures in Samara for you!
On Wednesday we had Doña Teo´s birthday, which was great. Us ´kids´had organised a few presents, a bamboo mobile (the kind that you hang from the ceiling, not the phone) and a wooden cross (we knew we were onto a winner with this present, she likes her rosaries). We also organised a cake and candles, baked by our neighbours in the Argentinian Panaderia. She was so touched, she was still thanking us today.
Today me and Lucie left Samara with Teo, her son Miguel Jr and her sister Sixta (pronouced sistah, quite fitting huh?) to drive to Volcan Arenal. It´s a whole lot cooler and a whole lot wetter (although every area of Costa Rica seems to be getting quite a few showers every day-evidently the first month of the rainy/green season.) We went straight to the hot springs, spent several hours in the lovely garden of Los Fuentes floating in the hot water while listening to the sounds of the erupting volcano. We didn´t see a whole lot of the volcano as it was pretty cloudy and it rained as well. Tonight we got a better glimpse of the whole volcano, and even saw some lava coming out of the top. Tomorrow morning we leave at 8.30 am with a bus-boat-4x4 tour to Monteverde (a bus to Lake Arenal, a boat across, a 4x4 to Monteverde) and will continue our trip from there.
