On Friday I finished my fourth week as a Standard III teacher at one of Punta Gorda's Catholic schools. Despite the crazy amount of days off (we went to school for the equivalent of 16 full days in September haha) it was a pretty jam-packed month! Here is a typical day for me: 5:45am: Go for a run. It gets too hot to run during the day, and I prefer the quiet of the morning to the hum the town has at night, so I go as the sun has just risen. Unless of course it's pouring, which it is doing more and more frequently as the rainy season slips into the hurricane season. Either way, I try to exercise even it's just some stuff in my apartment. It's important to be fully awake and energized ... read more

This afternoon school was canceled on account of either possible river flooding, or in case a storm hit us, I have heard conflicting reasons. Either way, no school until further notice and therefore : blogging time! I have had a pretty interesting adventure here so far - arranging a placement after surprising the school with my arrival, meeting a great class with very diverse needs and strengths, having my apartment flood twice in hurricane strength storms, visiting a lovely beach town, enjoying Belizean Rotary (more on this later), having my pretty purple bike stolen, and learning how to teach way more creatively! One thing I really am enjoying is getting to know a new town! Now that I am walking everywhere, I decided to take advantage of my slowed down pace (sort of slow, I walk ... read more

Back to school! And never more excited to do so! (Well that might be a lie, I'm always excited to go back to school.) But today was wonderful! My teacher mentor Miss Gwen and I had finished setting up our lovely and colourful room the weekend before, and Friday the 2nd was the school's orientation day. We got to meet about half the students since the rest didn't come, but that was nice - to sort of ease into it. Really it was a waste of everyone's time though, since we had to restate expectations and redo introductions today for those who didn't come, even though we weren't technically allowed to allot time for it today. Ah well! A lot of teachers voiced their concerns, hopefully the administration will listen for next year. But those little ... read more

I didn’t have to be at school until Friday this week, so I took advantage of my guaranteed time off to go to Placencia from Tuesday to Thursday! Placencia is a little ways north of PG, via bus then water taxi. It was great trip! I took the express bus from PG at 6am, and I was lucky! It was a greyhound style bus, not the little school bus, so it had A/C! It continues to blow my mind how inexpensive public transport is south of the States – just BZ $11 (about CAD$ 5.50) for an hour an a half bus trip, it was $2 more because it was the express. I splurged so I could just go straight there rather than stopping all the time. Once you arrive in Independence, the water taxi is ... read more

The first week of orientation is over and now we have two more weeks of prep and a couple meetings. School starts September 5th. It has been quite the adventure so far! The first piece of this crazy adventure – I showed up to the first staff meeting on Monday and they had no idea who I was. No one knew I was coming at all. Excellent. My VP was at least impressed that I had found out where to go and when, and had even showed up in Belize without confirmation from the school. Thing is, I THOUGHT I had confirmation haha! Turns out the principal who confirmed my placement is in fact on vacation until December and he did not pass on my info to the acting principal and didn’t even mention it to ... read more

August 15, 2011 I’ve only been here for 5 days now but I am definitely starting to feel a bit more settled which is good. Like I said in the last blog, we did find a place to stay! The hotel owner was very helpful in pointing me in a good direction and we ended up renting a two bedroom apartment from a very nice couple, Ludwig and Curlotte. Ludwig, is a vet/artist/gallery owner/chem teacher at the university campus in town. Very interesting fellow to say the least. Curlotte seems to manage the property and run the background stuff for the gallery. She was really helpful too. The apartment is close to both mine and Tom's schools (really, the whole town is close to everything...) so we're set! It's also been kind of nice that the ... read more

I kept putting this off until I could load pictures but too much time will pass and then it will be a mega blog post that no one has time to read! So here's a picture-less blog about getting to PG... First of all - I was packed super early for the trip. My mom and I watched 3 movies and just packed and got my bags all ready to go, but about 4 days before we were even going to go to Edmonton! So I spent those days trying not to add anything else to my luggage, since I had been doing so well! My one medium suitcase of gear (and a duffel of school supplies for the kiddies) was a far cry from the giant bags I packed for my exchange! I did make ... read more

Today we got up without the alarm but still woke up early. I always wake up with the sun. Once it hits our windows I can't sleep anymore. I went out to get some coffee & snacks & fully slipped in the mud flat onto my knee. Ouch. I was standing at the counter waiting for my coffee & let out a big sigh. The man next to me said, why the big sigh? I showed him my bloody knee & said, because I just fell down. Phew, glad I didn't get caught sighing for no good reason. He told me to go wash it off in the ocean & I'd be ok. So, that's what I did & so far he was right. ;) We packed up & waited for our water taxi to Belize ... read more

So... theres a bit to update on! On new years eve during the day we went on a snorkelling tour from around 11am to 4pm. We had many options but for a few annoying reasons which i wont go into, we ended up booking on a speed boat, but it ended up being a pretty great day out. We stopped at 3 places to snorkel, there were 9 of us on the boat plus 2 crew. The first place was called .............. it was the first marine park in Belize and its beautiful with lots of big big fish, a few sharks and green sea turtles swimming lazily around! The second stop was shark and ray ally and you instantly saw why, we were surrounded most of the time by many rays, only a couple of ... read more

Wow, another week has already gone by somehow, and I don’t know where all the time went. I have now been living in Belmopan for three weeks and every day I get more and more comfortable in it. From waking up extra early on market days to catch the best deals, to running in my neighbourhood, and officially being a regular at ‘ice point’, my favorite little snack shop just up the street, I defiantly feel at home here. Don’t worry mom, I still know where my real home is, but getting to experience living in an entirely new culture is so exciting. Nearly everything is different and backwards from the ways at home from the amazing staple rice and beans, to the slow and haywire bus system, to the dozens of friendly waves you get ... read more
