Half Moon Cay is a private cay in the Bahamas owned by Holland America Line (part of the Carnival Corporation). Last spring when I was on the Liberty, during one of my last cruises, we changed itineraries to go to Half Moon Cay. But because it’s a tender port and everything on land is run by crew from the ship, it was a hectic day and unless you were working crew, you couldn’t get off the ship. Two weeks ago, when we had our charter cruise, the Liberty relocated our home port from Fort Lauderdale to Miami. Along with the relocation, the ship has made an itinerary change. We now rotate between two seven day runs - one in the Eastern Caribbean and one in the Western. With my contract extension, I get to have one cruise of each of the new itineraries, a nice little treat right at the end of my contract. The new Eastern run takes us to St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, Grand Turk and a new one for me: Half Moon Cay, Bahamas. The Carnival Cruise line owns a few private islands. We went to the Half Moon Cay Island. At times, I wondered what would happen if the ship actually really got stranded on this island. There where actually wild chickens on this island. Maybe someone brought the chickens from the mainland just in case we got stranded.... read more
