Unlike our last short break to New York (see ), it was early morning flight, which meant being at Heathrow at 5.00am. Strangely for a British Airways flight, it was leaving from Terminal 3. I had a massive moan again about the self-service baggage drop. The tag on my daughter's case went horribly wrong and was all creased and out of line. I am going to be in so much trouble if that bag does not turn up in Gibraltar. Most of the airside area seemed to be one, huge, sprawling duty free shop, although I had thought that the Tory's had stopped duty free in the wake of Brexit. By this point we were hungry. Where Terminal 5 had Weatherspoon's on one extreme, Fortnum and Mason on the other extreme and not much in between, ... read more

I was up early again and headed out to another spot I like in Brooklyn for some more pictures back towards Lower Manhattan, where there are the remains of an old wooden pier in the foreground. It is obviously a popular spot as there were some other photographers there with me. I headed back to the hotel and, unlike after the earlier visit to Brooklyn, the trains were still quiet. It is Easter Sunday and it seems to be the one day (that I know of at least - I've not been here for Thanksgiving or Christmas) that "the city that never sleeps" partially sleeps. The Easter Sunday highlight is the Easter Bonnet Parade from St Patrick's Cathedral. We were not completely sure to expect as parade to us is a line of themed floats moving ... read more

I was, again, awake extremely early, but I couldn't face heading anywhere too far away, so I just popped out to the nearby Times Square for some early morning photographs . It's surprisingly difficult to get decent pictures of, given how bright the screens are. I gave it up as a bad job once I had been asked for money once too many times. Given the time in the morning, it was surprisingly busy. My daughter is a Starbucks fan so we went there for coffees and then (sadly) to McDonalds for some breakfast. The lady supervising the seating area was not impressed when we tried to get past with our Starbucks coffees. We then walked along Park Lane to look around some shops, including a browse in Tiffany's (I was justifiably concerned) and the very ... read more

Despite being exhausted from our late arrival, I was awake very, very early, due to still being five hours ahead on UK time. Furthermore, we like to sleep with the window open for some fresh air, which was a mistake due to New Yorkers' obsession with using their car horns - even in the early hours of the morning. I decided to get up and head to a place in Brooklyn called Dumbo, which is an area between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges. The name is apparently short for "Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass". It is one of my favourite photography locations for early morning (or evening) pictures of the Brooklyn Bridge and the skyline of Lower Manhattan. Whilst inhibited by the lack of sleep, I needed to get my head around the complicated train ... read more

I'm not entirely sure that the day is worth a blog entry as most of it was a normal day (I was working as normal until mid-afternoon, albeit from home) and then the rest of the day was nothing more than travelling as we were on a very late flight . It did mean that we could allow ourselves loads of time, given that there had been a lot on the news about all the chaos and queues at Heathrow, and there was also the potential of the environmental protesters who hate airports and have been blocking the access roads. We had booked the "Pod Parking", which was a new experience as it meant taking a small train called, obviously, a pod. They were queued-up waiting so we just needed to press a button and get ... read more

It was another one of my early starts, this time to the Berlin Cathedral. Someone must have seen me coming and waited until I had set-up my tripod, put the right filters on and composed my first shot, and then they turned off all the lights that were illuminating the cathedral. Grrr. After breakfast, we headed back out into Berlin again. We walked Potsdamer Platz, which was a bit of a disappointment. The buildings there are very dramatic, particularly the Sony Center and the Berlin Philharmonic, but that kind of modern architecture was not really what we had come to Berlin to see. The Spy Museum looked interesting, but we didn't go in. We wanted to see one of the old watch-towers that used to help guard the no-mans' land alongside the wall. We looked that ... read more

As is usual for me, I set off early some pre-dawn and dawn photographs. I walked to the Brandenburg Gate, which is fantastic to see, although the sky was not what I had hoped for. I got some photos nonetheless. One advantage of going out to anywhere at that time in the morning is that there are so few people around and I can get some uninterrupted views. There were just a few cyclists (if fact there are one hell of a lot of cyclists in Berlin) and they were moving fast enough to not show up in my photographs, except for some light-trails, which sometimes can actual add to the photographs. I walked up to the vast and imposing German federal parliament building. There were barriers and police outside it, but everyone else was just ... read more

It was a very, very early start as we were on an 8.45am flight (could be worse) and we do like to allow loads of time to get to airports. In fact we were way too early and we had loads of time to spare - thankfully there were none of the environmental mob blocking the roads, which is happening a lot at the moment. We were relieved to check-in as it meant that we had completed all the new, COVID related pre-flight bureaucracy correctly, as it was incredibly complicated - not just for the flight but also to keep the Germans happy. Of course, we were going to have to wear masks now right up until we leave the terminal in Berlin. We had a nice leisurely breakfast. We briefly contemplated getting in tune with ... read more

The workshop was over, so the early start today was self-inflicted. I got up at the usual 6.30am and headed off to Combestone Tor, to try for what would effectively be fourth time lucky. As I drive into the car park with my headlights on full-beam, it lit up the tor against the night sky. That actually made a great photo, although I needed to set-up to the side so that my shadow was not cast onto the rocks - schoolboy error. As the light came, it was looking like I would be disappointed yet again, but after about half an hour it became evident that going to be lucky and it was a perfect sunrise. I was really, really pleased that I had made the effort - much like when I went out on my ... read more

According to the weather forecasts, it was due to be foggy again, so we were anticipating going back to Wistman's Woods to try and get there before the fog started to clear again. The forecast was wrong, so it was a change of plan, again, and instead we all jumped into the minibus and went to Hound Tor, which sounded ominous, given the local association. One big difference between photography in Rannoch Moor and in Dartmoor is the amount of walking involved. In Rannoch Moor we pretty much jumped out of the minibus and started taking pictures. Dartmoor involves a lot more walking, which in some cases is quite steep and strewn with jagged and slippery rocks. How steep and how rocky depends on how far you are prepared to go for your photographs. These workshops ... read more
