I’m a born traveller with a love for adventure, change, and new experiences. My recent journey has taken me to Moshi, Tanzania in Africa for 6 months for the opportunity to work with Anza, a capacity building organization with a focus on sustainable development. I came here looking for a meaningful challenge, and although I’m here to work I will be seizing every opportunity I get to explore this beautiful country. My goal is to hike Kilimanjaro, relax in Zanzibar, escape to the Serengeti and everything in between; while I’m here I invite you all to watch me wander.

I did it! So as most of you know, I hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro with my friend, M last week and I am proud to say that we both made it to the summit at Uhuru Peak! Kili stands at 5,895 metres above sea level making it the highest mountain in Africa, and highest free-standing mountain in the world. I have to admit that it was one of the most challenging experiences of my life, and there were a few times on summit day that I didn’t think I would make it to the top. Thankfully our guides, Max and Winger from KiliClimbersandSafaris kept us motivated and were determined to get us to the top! My trek was 5 days long with 3 days leading up to summit day and 2 days to summit and descend. ... read more

A couple of weekends ago I took a little trip to Pare Mountains with our house manager, Amani and few of my roomates. Amani is from Pare mountains and organizes weekend trips to his home village which include a canoe trip in Lake Jipe, hiking to Kindoroko peak, visiting local pubs and a homestay at his hospitable Aunty’s house. It took us about 2.5 hours to get to Pare from Moshi by 2 very packed dala dala rides. Once we arrived, we hiked for about an hour up the mountain to Amani’s Aunty’s house. Although we had to hike part of the way in the dark, the view from the mountain was stunning, and the sunset was absolutely beautiful. Once we arrived, we were greeted with welcoming hugs, cold beverages and cheesy Nigerian movies, which I ... read more

Two months later…my apologies for not writing sooner, the time has just been flying by! I just got back from my second trip to Zanzibar, and since I didn’t write about the first time, I figured I could mesh both trips together. Zanzibar has been on my bucket list for years now, and I am so incredibly happy that I was able to visit more than once. My first trip was to Kendwa which is located at the Northern tip of the Island, and has some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. It was a nice and relaxing vacation with most of our time spent tanning and napping on the beach with the exception of one very nauseating boat trip. We snorkelled around a beautiful coral reef, which in my opinion (my friends would ... read more

I hope that everyone is enjoying their holidays and had a very merry Christmas! I enjoyed my time on the safari, but missed you all dearly! I’m not sure where to even begin with my safari, but one thing I can say is that it was absolutely breathtaking! The feeling of being able to watch wild animals in their natural habitat is indescribable by words, but I’ll try my best! We visited three parks, Tarangire National Park, The Serengeti National Park, and Ngorogoro Conservation Area. Tarangire’s name comes from the Tarangire river that crosses through the park, and is the only source of water for wild animals during dry seasons. “Serengeti” is derived from the Massai word “Serenget” which means “endless plains”, and let me tell you, that is exactly what it is! Ngorogoro is a ... read more

Wow…I can’t believe it is already December! My apologies for not posting lately, it has been a busy month. Our project is in full swing and we are heading in to our 3rd week of training with the youth at Pamoja Tunaweza Boys and Girls Club. They truly are an incredible group of people! The leaders and youth are equally passionate about the environment and share an entrepreneurial spirit that will be sure to drive the success of the C4C project. We are hoping to start collection by early 2015, and we are currently in the process of getting the second prototype of our collection carts made. Our first prototype didn’t work out the way we hoped it would, and it was quite the process to complete. I’ll try my best to sum it up, it ... read more

Happy belated Halloween everyone, I can't believe it's already November! I have been here for just a little over a month, 44 days to be exact and time has been flying by! I knew that it would, which is why I want to make the most of my time by seeing as much of this beautiful country as I can. We had a holiday a couple of weeks ago and decided to take a big group trip to the Materuni waterfalls. We hired a driver to take us on a hour long journey to the start of a 1.5 hour hike to the 150 m waterfall. The water was freezing, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to jump in, especially since there was a small cave that we could climb into that would lead us ... read more

Our organization has officially changed over to Anza, and the new website is up and running! If you would like to learn more about this incredible NGO and read some of our individual profiles, click this link:Anza. I have been blessed with an incredible team of co-workers who also double as my Tanzanian family. I am constantly surrounded by inspirational and like-minded individuals that foster an environment for growth and positive change, both inside and outside of our office. I am so incredibly thankful that I made the decision to move out here to help Anza reach their goals, because they in turn are helping me reach mine. I still have a lot to learn, but our C4C project is underway! Our proposal is nearly completed, and we had our first site visit to the dump ... read more

Today was the first day since I arrived that Mount Kilimanjaro was visible for the entire day, and let me tell you...she was beautiful! For those of you who don't know, Kili is a dormant volcano and at 5,895 m is the highest mountain in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world . The oldest person to ever summit Kili was an 87 year-old man, and the youngest was a 7 year-old boy, if you're interested in reading some other climbing records, check out this site : http://www.climbmountkilimanjaro.com/about-the-mountain/record-climbs/ ...I am so thankful that I have the great pleasure of living right beside the mountain, it's hard to not want to experience something that you get to see everyday, so I've decided to plan my hike for the end of March. I was originally thinking ... read more

Due to a huge rainstorm, we are having our first overnight blackout tonight! Since there are basically no street lights or back up generators, the whole town is pitch black. Lucky for us, we had a bunch of candles, flashlights and a few solar powered lanterns to take us through the night! Thanks to modern technology, I have enough battery life and a portable Internet stick for my laptop to let me write this post before bed! The lights went out around 6 p.m. just as the sun was starting to set, which just so happens to be the time we all make dinner. Fortunately, we have a gas stove and were still able to make a warm meal. We were bumping into each other a bit, but we made it work! It was actually kind ... read more

I'm finally doing it!! I regret not writing a blog during my adventures in Asia, so I'm doing it now! Better late than never right ? That's exactly how I felt about going back to school, which is actually the reason that I'm in Africa in the first place. Most of you know that I came to Moshi for an internship, but I'm sure a lot of you don't know exactly what it is I'm doing, I guess that's a good place to start... I am currently working for an organization called Anza (previously known as Time to Empower Africa's Children) they have just recently re-branded to better reflect to focus of their projects. "Anza" is the Swahili word for start, begin, initiate, launch, commence. It is a capacity building NGO that is dedicated to strengthening ... read more
