One of my favorite travel books is William Least Heat-Moon's "Blue Highways", It's a book I have read, and re-read many times. In one passage, he tells of chancing upon, completely by accident, what he thought was one of the most remarkable natural scenes in the southwest, Cave Creek Canyon. Since reading that first, years ago, I've always wanted to see it for myself, and today would be the day. I also wanted to drive the 30 mile dirt road that begins in the canyon, then goes up and over the ridge. The summit of that pass is at 7600 ft, and in Heat-Moon's book, he gets caught in a scary snow storm driving over.
