Turnipblade

My name is Chris, I am 24 and an Accountant from Sheffield, England.

In September 2010, I embarked on a 20 day tour of Europe, by coach, organised by Topdeck Tours, and this is the record of my journey.

The tag line of our tour '35 Aussies, 6 Kiwis, 4 Mexicans, 1 Malaysian, 1 Pom (me), an Irish Man behind the wheel and an emu leading the way....on our European Getaway'

Please note that my travel notes were created after the trip, as I didn't keep notes whilst travelling. Therefore my tenses may be a bix mixed up but I hope this provides advice to future travellers, memories for the many friends I made on my trip and stories for my friends back home to enjoy.

Day 20 - Amsterdam to London Another early start today, as we enter the final day of the tour, our trip back to England’s green and pleasant land. I pack my bag for the final time and head down for some bread for breakfast. The reception area is packed as I believe there are four topdeck groups in the hostel. We make the brief trek to the main road to wait for Phil to pick us up. We jump on the coach and make our way through the Netherlands. Today we have a day stop in Bruges, Belgium. We begin the day with the birthday music as its Kristeen’s birthday. Looking around the coach there are a fair few ill people, I dunno if there’s something going around but I’m feeling fairly good. We arrive in ... read more

Day 19 - Amsterdam I’m the first to wake up in our room, as this morning we have a cycle tour around Amsterdam, I am quite looking forward to it as I enjoy cycling and this is the cycling capital of the world. I have a cold shower and head down for breakfast. A few of our group are down in the food area, the breakfast is bread, no toasting facilities and no butter. It’s lame, I dunno how they can call this breakfast, anyhow I partake in bread. I then head outside for the ride, where it is chucking it down, but about a dozen of us brave the rain for our bike ride, which didn’t cost anything extra. Our guide gives us a bike and waterproof jacket, which I decide not to use, as ... read more

Day 18 - Berlin to Amsterdam A long, long travel day today, as we pass through Deutschland to the Netherlands. Today I sit with Brunette Mel on the coach. I’ve tried to make an effort to sit with different people on the coach, I have been sat with Trent quite a bit but have had spells with Lucy, Chin, Josh, Brendan, Tammy and now Mel. There is no day stop today, it’s a straight run through to Amsterdam. Again my memories of the trip today aren’t that good, the coach journeys were part and parcel of the tour and they were a good opportunity to talk to other people or catch up on sleep. I imagine this journey started with quite a few people being asleep after the pub crawl last night. We stop at a ... read more

Day 17 Berlin I wake up and feel dreadful, at first I blame it on the kebab but realise that I have hangover, this is the first time I’ve been hungover since I was 19. I head down for breakfast and just have some water, we then jump on the coach and head into town for our Third Reich walking tour. We meet up with our guide, an American guy called Jim, we start at the Reichstag, which currently has a stage being dismantled from the party the night before, it doesn;t make for great photos. He begins by giving us the story of how the Nazi’s came to power and how the war begun. Whilst we are stood there I feel like I’m going to throw up, can you imagine the scene, Englishman throwing up ... read more

Day 16 - Prague to Berlin I wake up this morning and have the customary bag pack. I seem to have lost my access card, which is annoying and I end up throwing all my stuff everywhere in an effort to find it, I eventually do. I head for breakfast and go for the basic option, toast as opposed to paying a bit for sausage and eggs. We jump on the coach and I’m pretty excited as we are heading to Berlin, the place I’ve been looking forward to most on this trip. Nothing much to note about the coach journey today, I think we may have watched the Vegas film again, but I opted for my IPod, I think I may have had a debate about the most cockney song ever, and sang bits of ... read more

Day 15 - Prague I wake up at 5:45 ready for today’s early morning sports fixture. St Kilda v Collingwood in the AFL Grand Final Replay. Three of us head out to a local American pub to watch the match. Andrea, Brendan and myself brave the early morning to watch one of the biggest sporting events in Australia....The question you’re asking is why am I, an Englishman, going to watch an Aussie Rules match. Well I’m interested in learning a bit about a new sport, plus it’s kinda exciting. On the way my friends inform me of the basics of the sport and how teams score. We arrive at the pub and it isn’t open yet but there are a few Australians outside. We get in and grab a good seat just in time for the ... read more

Day 14 - Tirol Region to Prague Packing is fairly easy today as I didn’t take much out of my bag yesterday. Breakfast is the normal stuff we’re becoming used to. We also have to make a packed lunch today for our journey to the Czech Republic. I don’t recall anything worthy of note from today’s coach journey. Our day stop is at Mauthausen in Austria, which was a Nazi concentration camp. We arrive and Jess gives us a brief discussion of what to expect. We arrive and head to the presentation room for a video. Most of the video is watchable, despite the story being told. However at the end of the video there are a number of horrific pictures which are extremely upsetting. We leave the presentation and nobody really speaks as I feel ... read more

Day 13 - Venice to Tirol Region Another travel day today, with an early start, as we are travelling to Austria for our single night there. I sit near the back of the coach, with a crowd of people who are becoming regulars at the back. The guys from Sydney, Kiwi, Marten, Josh, Trent, Lucy, Annaliese and Mel. We play a game which Lucy started, similar in annoyance to my hot air balloon game yesterday. I figure out the link early on in the game. The scenery outside the window is fairly pretty, similar to that in Switzerland. We pass an Olympic ski jump, which if I was guessing may have been in Innsbruck. My major annoyance today is that I turned my kindle on and the screen has frozen, the damn thing has broke.....aaarrrrggggggghhhh. I’m ... read more

Day 12 - Venice. There are a few sore heads this morning at breakfast after last night’s party. We catch a shuttle bus from our campsite to the main bus station in Venice. We then walk through the pavements and bridgees for 15-20 mins before we arrive at St Mark’s square. The famous square is fairly impressive, with the large tower on the basilica. We are told that this is the lowest point in Venice and is liable to flood given that the whole city is built on stilts and it is thought that one day the whole city will become submerged. There are also two huge platforms/pillars. We are told that they were used for public executions and that it is bad luck to walk between them, fortunately we didn’t. We head back to the square ... read more

Day 11 - Rome to Venice I wake up and pack my bags again, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to pack my bag. At breakfast we are treated to sausage...amazing. Today we have a different coach driver as due to EU working time directives, Phil has to have a rest, therefore he has gone ahead to Venice and we have a new driver, Paulie, for today’s trip. We stop for the customary picnic lunch which looks like leftovers from yesterday’s dinner. Today’s mini stop is in the town of Verona, famous for being the setting of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. As romance is in the air Jess decides for fun that we will write mystery love letters for a random person on the trip. This is quite fun. I draw Brunette Mel, who I hanged around with ... read more
