The Wall and all...
Hi, you travelin' ladies! My 6th grade reading class is reading a short story on The Great Wall. I told them I have relatives (yes, Liz, you ARE a relative) who are there right now. They weren't really impressed, but I tried. According to the story, the wall was built to keep out the marauding Mongols from the north, but it cost so much ( in money, materials, time, and lives) for the people to maintain the wall as well as pay taxes to keep the Ming Emperor's court in high style, that a revolt of the people occurred. The Manchu wanted to take over China, too, and managed to do so when the Ming Emperor invited them to help repel the revolt of the peasants. In addition to squashing the rebellion, they took over the government from the Ming. The irony is that the Wall was built to keep out those who had plans to take over China, but China ended up inviting the Manchurians in with open arms - no need for them to find their way around or through the Wall. Did you know the Wall was begun around 200 BC and worked on in bits and pieces until the 13-1400s? Now you know more than you ever wanted to know about the Great Wall lof China!
