The Chinese do not build elevators in buildings that are 6 stories or shorter. Some of us had wondered, before the trip, why are most Chinese people thinner than most Americans even though they eat a lot of carbs? Well it's probably because they have to walk everyhere. There are steps all over the place and the terrain is pretty hilly. It doesn't take long for that quick relief of flat land to quickly start taking you up or down. That's what we realized, is that we needed all of the food we could get to just maintain the amount of energy that we burn in a day. My apartment here is 6 floors up. The school I work at has 4 floors and to get to any of the classrooms I have to at least ... read more

So this weekend I went to Dali. It's one of the most beautiful places that I have ever seen. The altitude is really high and the air is so fresh. Yesterday, when we arrived in Dali, we went to see the Three Pagodas. However, Our tour guide said that the company thought that it was a waste of money to see so they did not have tickets for us. We had to buy our own tickets to see the pagodas. Yes, I had to buy a ticket to see them, they were not visible over the large wall that surrounded the front. The irriating thing is that this company was where the biggest chunk of the money for the trip went. So Wu laoshi has said that he's never using this company again and is looking ... read more

When we arrived in Beijing we saw red and blue flashing lights at random corners. At first we thought that they were actual police cars, but when we saw them, they were just posts. We asked Wu laoshi about it and he said that there is a phone that directly calls the police. In the US, we know that for traffic violations such as driving recklessly can get you a ticket. Well with the way that everyone drives in China, we wondered what do the police do? Well we found out one thing. The first night that we were in Kunming, the water in the apartment was not properly working. So, the Minds Abroad people took us to a hotel for the night while they fixed the problem. When we entered the hotel there was a ... read more

Oky so the cutest thing ever. Talking about the little girl that I pplayed the game with yesterday that I named Amy. Today she saw me in the morning and came over and gave me a hug and asked me how I was. We talked briefly but I found out that she is 9 years old and doesn't know when her birthday is. She has an older sister. During the breaks today (every 40 mins for 10 mins) she came and found me, grabbing hold my arm and not wanting me to let let go. We talked a little each time. She asked me after lunch if I wanted to play but I was really tired (I was tired, sore, and my throat hurts from teaching). I told her that I'd play with her on Monday ... read more

Asia May 7th 2012

I have been having a fantastic time here in China. I flew for about 20 hours plus the 9 hour layout in Seattle. The first morning in Beijing we went to the Bird's Nest and saw the Water Cube. We went to lunch and the food was amazing. There was a wedding going on on the other side of the resturant. My Chinese professor (Wu laoshi) informed us that May 5th is a special holiday because 5 +5 = 10 and it symbolizes completeness of an individual. After lunch I flew to Kunming. The plane ride was 4 hours. I slept for most of it because jet lag hit me hard at lunch. When I got to Kunming I dropped my stuff off at the apartment that I am staying at then went to dinner with ... read more
