St Petersburg Possibly the most uncomfortable coach journey of my life was spent on the Riga to St Petersburg route. Luckily it was a direct coach so there was no change needed as before. At around 3am after a long night of little to no sleep we arrive at the border! One of the guards brought on a sniffer dog which paid particular interest to the toilet, not sure how often they are properly cleaned! We then had to have passports and visas checked, filled in migration cards and disembarked so the coach could be properly inspected. After our passports were stamped (the best bit!) we got back on the coach and set off again. I was awake for the most part, while Toni somehow managed to sleep! We arrived around half an hour early, which ... read more

Woo Riga!!! Unloading from the coach we spark up a conversation with a guy who had been on the coach, turns out he is Australian and is heading to the same hostel! We walk together, for a little longer than expected, then turned, and headed for The Naughty Squirrel (which is definitely in my top five for name alone). We are greeted by Jarrod, the Australian who owns the hostel with his soon to be wife Guinta (she is Latvian) and are immediately invited to an ice hockey game that night! This for Ollie was possibly the warmest welcome ever! The rest of the day is spent shopping for food, and getting excited by an oven.....the first one we’ve seen since we left home, to celebrate we bought oven pizza and fish fingers! My first ice ... read more

We arrived in Praha a little later than expected, but nothing too major compared with the journeys ahead of us! Pretty tired we headed straight for the hostel. Upon arrival and being promped to hand over cash, it is then rememebered that we dont have any Czech currency whatsoever, also, do not have any clue about the conversion rate! Following directions to the cash point we are then faced with how much to draw out.....not know how much it means and only having a rought idea from the previous time i had been, i take out 800kr....seems like a lot, well it's not. After returning to the hostel we then have to return to the cash point...in the snow...in the cold....again! knowing how much we need to pay, i take out another 800kr (800kr is about ... read more

5th Jan Today we leave for Innsbruck; once again a large breakfast is in order! Following breakfast was a large…….lunch. We weren’t particularly up for feeling hungry today! After a very Austrian train journey (on time all the way!) we met Dan (old school friend) at the Innsbruck station. We went back to his flat which is right in the centre of town; at least it seemed it at night! Our Anglo-Austrian host cooked some food which we consumed with wine and then we went out for drinks in a place known as ‘moustache’. The Following day was the time for our first hangover of this trip, it wasn’t good. Sleeping next to a radiator doesn’t bode well for your head! After sitting around for half the day we had some food (Courtesy of Dan once ... read more

Berlin Cont. So, yesterday was the day we realised we didn’t fancy carrying all this stuff, new years resolution perhaps? We leave the hostel and head for the bakery which has fulfilled our needs for the last couple of mornings! After a few hours of croissants, tea, more croissants and coffee we set out for our final voyage on the ever punctual s-bahn. I always thought UK public transport was god awful. Now I know it! We ended up having to give directions to a German guy for the ‘Hauptbahnhof’ (Main Station) is it because I look like a Berliner? Because I certainly don’t sound it! We decided to send home everything we had removed from our bags instead of give it all away, still some worth to it all! After finding the post office it ... read more

NORWICH ONWARDS So, we left Norwich on the morning of the 28th, which was pretty emotional, what with the prospect of not seeing loved ones for such a long time. It all got off to a good start, such as arriving in London fifty minutes before planned, this was by national express coach, which is pretty close to a miracle if anything! London is, well London, so the plan was to avoid it, by heading straight for the station and feasting on some tasty bread in 'le pain quotiden' with vast quanities of chocolate spread :D Next was the Eurostar, the journey was fine, what made it better was the food packaged by sam from the previous nights get together! BRUSSELS Arriving at our hostel room was awesome, after deciding to not take the lift and ... read more
