Well, having crossed the Nullabor we stopped for two days in a little Caravan Park called Spear Creek, just east of Port Augusta. It nestles in a dry creek bed on a sheep station of about 16,000 hectares surrounded by stately Ghost Gum trees. We experieced very high deafening winds the first night and on venturing out of the caravan we found the leaves in the high branches nearly being torn off but the trunks and big branches below not even moving. Apparently they have stood for over 500 years and are not about to be blown away yet. The Flinders Ranges are beautiful and majestic looking like velvet has been draped over a spiked fence, with bright sunshine then dark shadows. Well, after months of organising, waiting and planning we eventually took off from Busselton, a day later than planned as the Step-Mum of one of our travelling companions died and he attended her funeral. The first two days travelling across W.A. heading for the start of the Eyre Highway was refreshing as the west has had lots of rain recently and everything was lush and green. Not so as we progressed on into South Australia, passing through km after km of wasteland, dry and dusty. When we reached the farming land it was so sad to see field after field of stunted crops, sparse and dry, even seeing whole harvesting rigs up for sale on the side of the road beside farms.
