Oceania » Australia » Victoria » Lakes Entrance December 8th 2009

Our time spent in Batemans Bay was pretty cold and wet but did not deter us from having a good time there. From there we set off to visit friends in Victoria, at Eagle Point which is near Paynesville at Lakes Entrance. On the way we stopped for lunch at Tilba Tilba, a delightful little village that feels like time forgot. Not an easy place to take a caravan but we found our way OK and wandered round the shops, buying a few little mementos for home. Back on the road again we crossed the border into Victoria passing through Cann River and little places with curious names like Bellbird Creek and Cabbage Tree Creek. We stopped at Orbost for lunch and found a wonderful bakery, and just sat on a seat outside and watched the ... read more

In my last blog I mentioned that we were going to see Craig Stewart at the Kempsey Heights Bowling Club, and I must apologize for spelling his name wrong. Jeremy and Michelle introduced us to him when they gave us a CD they had bought at the Tamworth Country Music Festival when they first heard him. We have been singing away to his songs ever since and could not believe our luck when we heard he was performing at the Kempsey Heights Bowling Club. Well we went along to see him and were not disappointed. He is a very talented singer/song writer and we were delighted to be able to purchase another CD - to give our old one a rest !!! At half time he happily chatted to us and told us of his life ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Nambour October 25th 2009

For those of you who are faithful blog readers you have probably been wondering where on earth we have got to. For the others, you are probably grateful that we have gone silent. The reason there has been no word from us is that we have been travelling a route that we travelled on our last trip and it would have been repeating myself. But a quick overview .... Like last time, we spent a couple of weeks in Gracemere, just outside Rockhampton where we enjoyed the company of John's family. He has two daughters, one son and two grandchildren living in the area and we spent some great times with them. The heat was unbearable and we found a wonderful escape from it at Emu Park, right on the beach. There is a shady park ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Bowen September 11th 2009

At the end of my last blog I put in a photo of Merry, Sue and Brian but somehow did not include an explanation. When we had our kennels in Busselton we had the great pleasure of having Lyn working for us and since we left the kennels we have kept in contact with Lyn and her husband Barry. A couple of years ago we were in Albany and met up with Lyn and Barry and had lunch with them and Lyn's sister Sue. Now back in Mossman in Queensland a few weeks ago. Trevor was chatting to a chap who had a Busselton number plate on his car and mentioned that we ran the kennels in Busselton, and a man standing nearby heard him and came across and said that his sister-in-law Lyn used to ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Mossman September 2nd 2009

Our alarm was set for 3.30 am and we set off for Cairns Airport at 4.00 am to meet Nigel and Michele off their 5.00 am flight. Still dark, the mountain road down from Mossman to Cairns is quite hazardous but very little traffic was coming through at that time of the morning. Their flight was on time so we set off back to Mossman where they were booked in to a cabin on our caravan park. We stopped off at a viewing point on the way back and saw the sun come up over the Coral Sea, just beautiful. Before we left home Trevor put a loaf on to bake in our bread maker and it was just finished when we got back, oh the aroma. We cooked bacon, eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes and enjoyed ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Normanton August 12th 2009

OK, here we go again. The drive from Mt. Isa up to Cloncurry was very spectacular scenery-wise. Hilly and green after lots of dry countryside. We stayed overnight just north of Burke and Wills Roadhouse in a free campsite and met up some friends we have met many times along the way, Bruce and Joan from Busselton plus another lovely couple. The folk you meet along the way are just so friendly and happy to tell you about any must-not-miss attractions. On the 2nd day we arrived in Normanton after travelling through countryside littered with Brolgas, slim grey birds about 4ft tall with bright red plumage on their heads. If I said we saw thousands it would not be an exaggeration, and with each one we were equally impressed. Normanton is an old gold mining town ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Mataranka July 19th 2009

When I published my last blog I thought I would not be chatting to you again until we reached far North Queensland, but the places we have visited and the things we have done really do warrant a mention. After leaving Katherine and the beautiful hot springs we travelled on down to Mataranka. This is a small country town with very few amenities but they have two of the most wonderful hot springs you could ever wish to bathe in. We stayed at the Mataranka Caravan park which is adjacent to Bitter Springs and we were told that these springs are both deep and fast flowing which did not bother us too much but when told there was a big python living there we opted for the springs at Elsey Homestead instead, inspiration for the book ... read more

DARWIN AND KATHERINE. Darwin was one of the places we were most looking forward to visiting as we had never been this far north in Australia. We had already booked Tumbling Waters Caravan Park ahead and when we arrived we found it nestled deep in the tropical bush about 65 km from the center of Darwin. Standing at the office we could see a crocodile enclosure nearby with at least 8 fresh water crocs of various sizes just basking in the sun, The enclosure was very secure and it is amazing how soon you get used to living in such close proximity to dangerous wild animals. Not so the Cane Toads !!! They are the most huge, ugly, repulsive thing you could ever see and the coating of their skin is very toxic, especially to other animals. ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Kununurra June 27th 2009

KUNUNURRA. Moving on from Broome, we traveled over 900km heading towards Kununurra. We once again referred to our trusty travel companion, the Camps 5 book. All free overnight camping areas are listed in this book and there are details of the facilities provided on each site. Our main concern is that we can take our dogs there and that the camp site is away from the main road, as the huge 4 sectioned roadtrains make a mighty noise as they travel all through the night. It is good to save a few dollars this way but most of the sites are very dusty and our poor dogs need a bath urgently when we arrive at the next proper caravan site. It is amazing how popular these sites are and are usually full by about 5pm each ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia June 13th 2009

We are celebrating 30 years living in Australia this December and we have lost count of the number of times family and friends have told us we just must visit Broome. Well at long last we have made it on our round Australia trip, almost 3000km from Busselton, and it is everything we were told about it, and more. For the past few years Broome has been dog unfriendly with none of the many caravan parks taking dogs. In the new year Tarangau caravan park decided to allow travelers with pets to stay in their park and it was very welcome news, especially to us with Millie and Pat and John with Freckles and Buddy. Tarangau Caravan Park is very clean and friendly and a short walk to Cable Beach which has to be one of ... read more
