Katherine has some thermal springs which are fantastic to float around in. If you have ever seen the movie Cocoon then you can imagine the seen that was playing out before me. A group of 20 grey nomads all sprawled out in the water, giggling and splashing around like kids, I was just waiting for the alien pods to appear. The next morning we took a sunrise cruise up Katherine Gorge, Reuben beat Matilda champion croc spotter to find the first and only croc we saw, Matilda to busy eating breakfast to spot it.... read more

Spent a night off road camping at Edith Falls, about 30 kms north (so the termites tell me) of Katherine. Had quite a few G and T's with a ex-Belgian, Darwin local who was once the right hand man to a famous Melbourne chef.... read more

Stayed in Litchfield for 4 days, a new swimming hole each day. May get rid of the GPS now that I can distinguish North just by looking at a termite hill (then checking GPS). Andi ran into some old Coleraine friends (Cathy O'Connor and Glen Rigby) at one on the falls.... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Darwin June 29th 2013

We hung out in Darwin for 5 days. Caught up with another of Andi's cousins for dinner one night, took an evening harbour cruise and generally chilled out for a bit. Andi enjoyed the Mindal beach markets almost as much as the sand flys enjoyed her. Took a very interesting heritage walk one morning around Darwin center. Biggest hit for the kids, the Darwin wave pool.... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Arnhemland June 17th 2013

We stop at Ubirr to check the view into Arnhenland. Andi goes to the facilities and seems to be taking a long time, only to find out she had found a snake in one of the 2 toilets! At Cahills crossing into Arnhemland we spot a foreign tourist fishing on the crossing causeway, Matilda champion crocodile spotter points out a rather large fiend lurking not too far upsteam, pretty sure I know who my money would be on. Next stop Darwin, someone told Andi there were markets there!... read more
Ubirr Kakadu

We head from Mataranka to Kakadu via Kathrine and Pine Creek. Just as we leave Mataranka we fill up with fuel, but need to push past the Brolga's milling around the bowsers. (hope they are getting cheaper fuel than me!) Much to Reuben and Matilda's pleasure we do some more hiking to lookouts, Jim Jim Falls (finally get to push the 4WD button) and check out some Billabongs. Haven't had to use the Bull-bar yet although a few Roo's have come close, found that the good thing is its the perfect height to rest a can on when sitting in a camp chair. We take a Billabong sunrise cruise and the wildlife is pretty special, birds everywhere and our guide proudly points out the first spotting of Brolga's for the season. (maybe those fellas at Mataranka ... read more

After a great night catching up with Andi's cousin in Alice Springs we headed for Tennant Creek, stopping at the Devils Marbles for a quick game. After a night in Tennant Creek we make our way to Mataranka, of coarse via the Daly Waters Pub. Andi not keen to hang up her bra in the front bar as its new, so we settle for a beer instead. As soon as we hit Mataranka we head straight to the thermal springs for a swim. The spring is warm but its even warmer outside (32 C).... read more

We spent 2 days staying at Kings Creek Station, which is a working cattle station. Great camp site with fire pit and not to far to King's Canyon. We did the rim walk and were all pretty pleased with ourselves when reaching the top of the first climb, only to run into our 85 yr old camp neighbours! Mind you they did not look too flash the next day.... read more

The Northern Territory. The kids + parents knackered after the Olga hike, Reuben tells me it was 10800 steps return to the lookout. I believe him.
