Africa April 16th 2010

Friday was our last day in Cape Town so to celebrate a good time we all went out to Stellenbosch. Jeff had sorted out a winery there called Spier. The wine tasting was good so the grown ups were happy. There was a cheetah research place there so the boys (and Susan) got to pat a real cheetah without getting eaten, so they were happy. I was photographer. Smart. There was an African-themed restaurant there called Mayo which served superb African dishes. You could help yourself and have as much as you like. A real problem for someone like me who was brought up to "eat what is put in front of you". All in all a brilliant venue and a nice way to say thanks to Jeff and Cornel. Cornel took us for a drive ... read more

This is certainly a land of great contrasts. And we probably went from one end of the spectrum to the other in the space of two days back in Cape Town. On Tuesday we went on a "Township" tour, and then on Wednesday we spent the day swanning around the wine region of Paarl-Stellenbosch-Franschoek. Slumming it one day and living it up large the next. Well we did see how the other half live on the Township tour, thats true. We started in the Malay quarter of Cape Town where the original governors houses were converted into slaves quarters when Indonesian slaves were imported to do the work centuries ago. The terrace houses are spectacular, trying hard to outdo each other in the brilliance of their colours - bright greens, blues and brilliant yellows. A bit ... read more

On Thursday Jeff and Cornel came through with a very cunning plan. They both took the day off so we could get away up the Garden Route a day early and beat the Easter traffic out of town. So off we went, north via Stellenbosch then Franschoek and over a mountain pass to the farmland on the other side, called the Overberg. Franschoek is surrounded by mountains and chock full of wineries and quaint white buildings. Quite a french town after the Huguenot (sp.) settlers, whereas a lot of the rest of the area around Stellenbosch is more Dutch in architecture and influence. We'll probably head back this way later on and test the local vintage, not that I'd know what to look for. Over in the Overberg it was dry rolling country and the roads ... read more

Well we are probably a good sleep away from being totally on top of our game still. Those flights had seemed fine on paper. No appointments on the Monday morning when we get back please Penny, I'd hate to fall asleep mid-meeting. But its great to be here. Jeff (brother) and Cornel have got a great set up. They live on the northern edge of the city out near all the wineries. Bugger. They are both engineers and Jeff has been busy sorting out roundabouts next to the new soccer stadium here. So when you are watching World Cup games from Cape Town look out for Jeff's roundabout - just outside the stadium. Anyway we decided to do something that I couldn't have done when I was here twenty years ago playing cricket. We decided to ... read more

Hi folks, Well we have arrived safely at Jeff & Cornel's place in Cape Town. It was a long way - 10 hours to Singapore, 8 hours there, then another 10 to Joburg, and one and a half from there to Cape Town. So the body clock was slightly out of kilta on arrival. The flights weren't bad though considering. Mitchell was delighted that we all had individual TVs. At one stage before we got on he was actually heard to say 'If I don't have my own TV I'm not going' (tongue in cheek). Anyway the boys quickly became glued to the box, so for the part from Chch to Singapore there was only intermittent communication between family members. I saw a couple of good movies and a full set of highlights from last year's ... read more

We're now sitting in the departure lounge at LAX waiting for our plane. We've got about 3 hours. I just love these long waits at airports. All of us are a bit shot after an adrenalin-packed 5 days here. And today after a 2 hour wait in the que, we finally found Nemo. It was the one big ride we couldn't get on on our first day at Disneyland because the que was enormous and you can't use a fastpass to get onto it. Fot the other popular ones you can get a fastpass which gives you a set hour when you can go on that ride without having to line up with everyone else. So if you plan things you can get around most of it, which we did. We had 2 days (today ... read more

We have now dropped off the RV and are now in our hotel just bordering on Disneyland. So there is no escape. We're going to Disneyland tomorrow. Susan and I have had our couple of days of wine tasting so the party's over and its now back to being slaves. Actually some of those roller coasters look pretty big so I'm looking forward to it myself. We were in Santa Barbara for the Fourth of July parade and it was very impressive. There is no doubt Americans are very proud. I almost had a lump in the throat myself for a while there. When the Vietnam vets came past all the people sitting on the footpath around us got to their feet. A bit of respect, and I thought that was pretty good. The local ... read more

We've had a great couple of days here in the Santa Ynez Valley basically just swimming in the pool in between bouts of wine tasting. Now we're bracing ourselves for the Fourth of July celebrations tomorrow. We'll probably be settled into our new campsite on the other side of Santa Barbara by the time things get into full swing but whatever happens I'm sure it will be interesting because there are never-ending displays of rampant patriotism all over the place - I now know EXACTLY what the US flag looks like - big ones, little ones, ones on car aerials, ones on dog collars - if you have a special type of US flag you're looking for just let me know and chances are we've seen one like that in the past couple of weeks. ... read more

Thats right - Sideways. If you saw the movie "Sideways" then thats where we are now - at Buellton which is an hour or so north of Santa Barbara, drawing closer to LA as the excitement level increases for the boys. All they're interested in is having the crap scared out of them on roller coasters. Susan and I just want to drink wine and try and escape their reality! Going back though, after we didn't see any bears at Shasta we moved on to Lassen Volcanic Park hoping to see some there. Again we did the mountain climbing thing up to about 8000 ft on Mt Lassen and up there they have this volcanic area which is really hot and smelly - Seth was blaming me for all the bad smells going around until ... read more

Its been quite a while since I last sat in front of a computer to update this travel blog. We've spent a lot of time in state parks with no internet access etc but now we're down the coast and I've found one and half an hour to start catching up. Jim & Laura's was great. really good to see them and their girls. When i last wrote we'd been down the river on a raft. Well after that we did a bit of wine tasting in Washington state, Susan did some outlet shopping, we did a bit of touristy stuff including the Discover centre which traces the jouner that Lewis & Clark took getting across to the wild west, and generally enjoyed ourselves there catching up. To add validity to Mitchell's claims about the ... read more
