Geo: 53.3441, -6.26749Before beginning today's entry, we have to make a slight adjustment from yesterday. On the way back from listening to some great traditional Irish music, it rained on us. So, we did have to pull out the umbrellas. ***We decided to start today by splitting up for the first time. Jake and Jeannette headed to the National Library to try and dig up some old potatoes (that would be family history research), while Rich and Barb took a historical walking tour led by a Trinity College history graduate. No luck on the potatoes, but Rich and Barb learned quite a bit. Barb adds that this was a very typical Dust vacation day because there was a lot of history and very little food.We regrouped for tea just as the rain started to fall on ... read more

Geo: 53.012, -6.32293Today we took our second tour in two days, but this time we toured the south of Dublin as opposed to the north yesterday. The company was called "Wild Wicklow Tours" and it wasn't exactly wild, but we did have a lot of fun. Our tour guide's name was Michael, a history and geography teacher here in Ireland. His happy-go-lucky philosophy transferred well to the tour guests and we very much enjoyed his commentary and take on things like "heritage" as well as the future of the European Union and, really, peace in general. After a brief history lesson as we drove out of the city, we stopped at a sandy beach that offered a beautiful view of ships, swimmers, islands, and sailboats. Many of the homes in the area are still summer homes for ... read more

Geo: 53.7096, -6.53999After a tasty breakfast at McDonalds, we caught our bus tour right in front of our hotel to head north from Dublin. As we traveled through the north side of town, we were told that the north side of the river was once the posh end of town, mostly built during the reigns of the Georges. Later, however, the wealth moved south of the river and many of the buildings turned into tenements. To this day, it is clear that the area has not been very well maintained. Out from the city we drove through Slane, home of Slane Castle where many concerts are held. They were setting up for the Rolling Stones as we passed by. Our guide made a joke about the collective age of the Stones, referring to them as "famine ... read more

Geo: 53.3441, -6.26749Our ferry arrived at the Dublin Ferryport at 5:55 a.m. We slept a bit here and there. Jake got kicked in the head by a stranger. He just rolled over and went back to sleep. So did the stranger. We spent the night on benches in a deli. Honestly, the boat was very nice... almost like a cruise ship. It was just that the trip began at 2:40 a.m. and we were too exhausted to enjoy the amenities. We caught a bus into Dublin City Centre and made our way to the Best Western Royal Dublin Hotel. They didn't have both of our rooms ready, despite a call from London warning of our expected early morning arrival. After a comedy of errors, including walking into a room that had not been made up, we ... read more
