Geo: 19.7297, -155.09So full disclosure- I've never seen the magic in the cruising underworld. The idea of being transported, along with 2,000 of your closest friends to various ports of call that could easily pass for very large souvenir stands selling the same T-shirts and trinkets didn't hold much appeal. And the never ending buffet line-ups and riveting shuffleboard tournaments couldn't pull me to the dark side. But when I mentioned the idea of a slow boat back to Hawaii/Asia to the Princess, she was all over it (and it became another in a long list of retirement gifts she was busy acquiring because what the princess wants, the princess gets). Under the guise of trying anything once, I was happy to give it a go, and it had to be a breeze compared to air ... read more

Geo: 32.7157, -117.162Apologies for the gap between postings but as our followers know, once DH found out that there was going to be a retirement party for her back in Toronto (and there was going to be gifts and a piper), we had to interrupt our world trip and return post haste. There was also the small manner of selling our home of 17 years as well as selling off the remainder of our belongs that had survived our original purge.Once we were formally evicted from our home by the new owners, we set up shop in a local B&B (which was actually just a B since Carl would be up all night chasing the local girls around the bar, and couldn't get up in time to prep any breakfast).DH had already completed her goodbye tour ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Hervey Bay September 3rd 2011

Geo: -25.2836, 152.836We wanted to spend our last couple of days in Australia in the Hervey Bay and Fraser Island area (which is just north of Brisbane) but that made for some pretty hard driving to make our way out of the interior and back to the coast. DH took on her role as navigator with a suitable amount of gusto- she had two or three maps opened up (although the city map of Bangkok created some confusion), and she was charting our progress by tracing her finger along the highlighted roads (and got only slightly flustered when she came to the edge of the page), and would, in her best navigator voice, announce the name of the town or crossroad we had just passed. Not to be picky, but I suspect that some of the ... read more

Geo: -18.2763, 144.602Rather than backtrack along the costal highway we wanted to head inland and see a little bit of the Queensland Outback (and spot some Roos in the wild). Having our very own Spaceship allowed us to stop and look around at any point the urge hit us. We tracked a Platypus (unsuccessfully) along a creek in Yungabura, photographed the world's most photographed tree, the Curtain Fig, in a nearby forest, we wandered through the "best mining museum in the southern hemisphere" in Herberton (convincing ourselves in the process that there must be a significant shortage of mining museums in the southern hemisphere) as well as a really nice heritage village in the same town.As we powered our Spaceship along increasingly isolated roads the topology changed dramatically and although we weren't in the Outback highlighted ... read more

Geo: -16.1, 145.46It wasn't as tough maneuvering a Spaceship along the wrong side of the road as I thought it might be and we made our way north along the coast almost incident free until we arrived in the heart of Cape Tribulation. Along the way we learned that it was something of an obligation to wave at anyone else we saw driving a Spaceship, and it was equally important to not wave at those driving any other rental vehicle (of course, the Grey Nomads wandering all through Australia with camper trailers firmly in tow, had to be acknowledged with a subtle wave just off the top of the steering wheel). The folks in Australian tourism bill Cape Trib as the oldest rainforest in the world and the only place where a rainforest meets a beach- ... read more

Geo: -16.9254, 145.775Rather then return to Brisbane we opted to re-enter Oz through Cairns and it took just a couple of small plane adventures to deliver us back into the hands of Australian officials. In a moment of Deb B shopping madness, I had picked up a huge carving during our Sepik River travels, largely because it seemed to be such a good bargain. It's much too big to be easily carried through the rest of our travels, we don't even have a house to display it in, and to top it off, we now had to run the gauntlet of the same Australian Customs that took a dim view of my unopened potato chip bag the first time we crossed swords (they have a legendary reputation in PNG for confiscating wood products). After completely unwrapping ... read more

Oceania » Papua New Guinea August 22nd 2011

Geo: -5.23, 145.79First impressions of Madang? There was certainly a lot less razor wire and a few brave glass windows even decorated the streetscape. Security guards were still highly visible but we even managed to snag a free ride from the dock to the hotel with a couple of them inside what passed for an armoured vehicle. I think we're going to like it here! The first order of business was to wash away the grime of our freighter journey with a swim in the pool. It was then that we noticed the vampires swooping all around our cozy Madang complex. Sunlight didn't seem to faze these particular bloodsucking Draculas, but they were definitely the biggest bats we had ever seen and they hanging upside-down in the trees all around the pool. Turns out they were fruit ... read more

Geo: -3.56519, 143.62After days on the Sepik River there's no way I was going back to the Airport Lodge in Wewak to clean up for our trip to Madang so we stayed at the Talio Lodge. The enterprising dude who owned this facility had pimped out a number of shipping containers that you would normally find dockside or on an ocean traveling freighter. Never having slept in a shipping container before this seemed to be something of a must-do. The attached restaurant (made from a much bigger shipping container) even served a blue slushee drink which sealed the deal for me.You could fly to Madang via Port Moresby but we had heard that there was a 'freighter' that worked the north coast of PNG that was going to Madang the next day. Never having traveled via ... read more

Oceania » Papua New Guinea » East Sepik August 16th 2011

Geo: -4.20493, 143.52Some scene-setting is required if you are to fully understand the joys of spending a night at the Airport Lodge in Wewak. The front reception area has been long abandoned in much the same way a retreating army gives up it's more vulnerable territory in favour of the more defensible high ground- in this case locked offices in the back. In a prelude of what was to come we were shown to the Margaret room, which presumably was the best of the bunch named, as it was, after the owner herself. All of the rooms bore the names of the owners family which must have been endearing at one time but, given the current dilapidated condition of the rooms, must have been somewhat insulting at present. The rooms surrounded an enclosure that was billed ... read more

Oceania » Papua New Guinea » East Sepik » Wewak August 15th 2011

Geo: -3.56519, 143.62We had met a couple from Germany while attending the festival who were trying to put together a few days on the Sepik river so we arranged to join them if we could find transport to Wewak. This proved difficult as the only way to reach Wewak was via air and the exodus after the festival had chewed up all of the available seats. We did contact MAF, the airline run by missionaries in PNG, and while they did not fly according to any schedule, they were "thinking" about flying to Wewak on the Monday as we required but the plane was being "repaired" over the weekend??Apparently they were able to glue the wing back on, because when we showed up first thing Monday morning they were pretty certain they'd be flying at some ... read more
