After more than 12 years since my last sejour in Paris I was curious to see what had changed and what stayed stable. I had forgotten just how much, by and large, French culture is one that holds fasts to its traditions in certain areas. A few standouts still appear to be going strong. To begin with, yes, my impression is that Parisians continue to enjoy smoking and talking in cafes - or, more correctly, when they sit outdoors at a cafe. I don't know how they manage in the winter. We ate dinner yesterday evening at a brasserie where drinks were being offered at a 2 for 1 deal as an aperitif. We disembarked old style at Orly, landing far from the terminal, descending the plane by a staircase and going by bus to the building. At the aiport and around Paris I have noticed at first glance much less evidence of the surveillance and security consience state that exists in the United States. Even in highly touristy areas like the Marais and Notre Dame this seemed the case. It struck me just how much as an American I have gotten accustomed to surveillance cameras, soliders, police and security alerts all around us. I am curious to see how the other locations we will visit compare with Paris. To travel - to be on the road so to speak (or on the sea and in the air) - is as much a part of being human as staying put in one place. Whether by necessity, choice, or some combination of both, to undertake a voyage away from our home or from our familiar routines involves adventure, risk, and a launch into the unknown. It's been twelve years since I was last on the European continent. Through the Internet the world can be in front of us, but there is nothing like the real thing.
