Chinese Medicine Hmmm. . . I think there are less drastic and more sociable ways!! However, it seems that Xi'an people have perfected the art of cooking with chilli!
Hi Danielle,
Yes, it is a VERY interesting city. Personally I prefer places somewhat off the main tourist track. There is a sense of "real" China in Jin'an - just my opinion, of course.
We flew in from Xi'an but you can access Jin'an from Beijing or Shanghai. It is just two hours flying from Shanghai. Southern China Airlines or Hainan Airlines have good service.
From Jinan you can branch out to many other beautiful areas in Shandong province including Tai Shan (Mount Tai).
Staying with a host family has many advantages over staying in a hotel as you get to experience real Chinese family life. If you are interested further I can give you details. You are welcome to email me at taishendo@gmail.com

How do I get there? Where do I stay? I read your story about Jinan with interest. It sounds like a very interesting and natural city. One of my problems is that how do I get there and where do I stay? I don't speak Chinese. You mention a host family. How does this compare to staying in a hotel? How do I contact a host family?
I am passionate about travelling the road less travelled and particularly passionate about travelling China sharing my experiences with other travellers.
My partner JJ and I run a guest house and retreat centre near Tianmushan. In between travelling to and from Shanghai I enjoy quiet meditation in old Chinese temples, teaching Mindfulness Training and Qigong, and walking the tracks of the mountain. ... full info
