The weather wasn’t too good, cloudy skies with intermittent light rain. No views of the volcano over Lake Villarrica from the front porch of our cabin yet. Fortunately, it’s still possible to enjoy a visit to the hot springs that are famous in these parts despite the clouds and light rain every now and again. Based on the number of recommendations, out of all the options available we settled on the Termas Geométricas as our destination and it turned out to be a good choice. It was a very nice experience and we all had a very good time. The setting was quite and the way the individual pools were set up, blending in to the natural surroundings. Very picturesque and serene, everything you imagine a good spa would be (not that I have much experience ... read more

We arrived in Santiago on the over-night flight from Miami and were able to re-book ourselves on the early onward flight to Temuco which saved us from spending about 5 hours in the Comodoro Armando Benitez Airport. The airport in Temuco turned out to be pretty small so it was mighty easy to find the Hertz office, located just outside, so we could pick up our rental car. We had to wait a bit since we had initially arranged for the car to be ready and waiting upon our arrival on the later flight, but after about 45 minutes we were on our way in a Toyota 4-Runner. We had brought road maps with us and also were using smartphone data to use the map app, but it turned out that was more for reassurance than ... read more

After three previous failed attempts to travel to the Lakes District, we finally made it! Way back in 2004 a work conflict arose which forced the first cancellation, then the weather forecast was so poor that travel to the lakes would have been too disappointing so we diverted at the last minute to Buenos Aires and Santiago (a change we took advantage of by making time to take in Valparaíso and Viña del Mar, and also to stay at the Casa Real Hotel located right on the Santa Rita Vineyard in the Maipo Valley which turned out to be quite an awesome experience), and then the earthquake of January 2011 occurred about a week prior to our next scheduled departure so we were forced to cancel for the third time. Needless to say, after almost 10 ... read more

It's been a few days since the last entry dated Monday, 22 June. The majority of the time since then has been in the car driving. I left at 7:30AM from Laredo, TX and arrived in Wichita, KS around 7PM driving a bit over 760 miles. The morning was brutal. I went to bed late the night before and woke up early and couldn't get back to sleep. As I was driving through Texas that morning I regretted the decision to just get up and make productive use of the time by getting an early start on the road. Hard to keep awake. Assuming more risk behind the wheel than I had felt comfortable with that morning until I got my second wind in the early afternoon. Decided to get the oil changed, tires rotated and ... read more

We leave Guadalajara around 8:30AM and drive. We drive and drive. And drive some more. The scenery is nice: flat and open, some mountains in the distance. Cell phone coverage gets better as we continue moving further north. The rest stops on the tollway get nicer. There are Subway sandwich shops and 7-11's. Some of the toll booths even take US Dollars. There are mountains as we approach Saltillo and Monterrey and the roads get curvy (the sign in Spanish describes them as sinuosa, a cool word I think). The highway here gets very windy, there are dust devils. I don't know what they are now--Dave tells me later--but it's pretty wild to see the wind kicking up huge plumes of dust at the foot of the mountains in the distance. The wind shakes the van. ... read more

It's been a while since I had time to sit down and write about my last couple of days in Mexico. The last week has really been a whirlwind, a lot of time behind the wheel. The last day of activity in Mexico I spent in a little suburb of Guadalajara called Tlaquepeque. After you say it a couple of times, it isn't as hard as it looks. It's a neat little town with a lot of good shopping. I hadn't really picked up many souvenirs so far in the trip so I had to come here rather than tag along with Dave and his son Jake enjoying the sights in Guadalajara. I picked up some of the talavera that I missed down in Puebla (they sell it here too) and also some of the blown ... read more

Today we ride the famous Tequila Express train from the FerroMex train station in Guadalajara to the Amatitan valley. Supposedly the birthplace of tequila, the town is home of the Casa Herradura tequila distillery at the Hacienda San Jose del Refugio. The tour is extremely well organized, the assembled group is divided among four packed train cars, all very modern. We are in the red car. As we line up to board we are greeted by a mariachi band, Los Toritos (they actually have songs available for download on napster). Like tequila, mariachi also traces its origins here and is another of Guadalajara's famous exports to the world. The train ride is about 1 hour 45 minutes during which we are serenaded by the mariachi band. The train passes through nice country, filled with farms of ... read more

We left Guanajuato around 9 AM and arrived in Guadalajara at noon after an uneventful 3 hour trip through some nice country that is reminiscent of Texas or the American Southwest; very open, scrub trees, mountains in the distance, blue sky. All in all, a nice drive. After dropping the luggage and passengers at the hotel, Dave and I head to the Guadalajara Country Club--the wife of a couple we are friends with at the Embassy in Tegucigalpa is from here and her family still lives here. Her dad is a long-time member of the club and gets us all in as guests. The course is very nice, the nicest course I've ever played including even the Blue Monster in Doral, FL. They shut it down for close to a month every year to get it ... read more

Day Seven: We left Teotihuacan around 8:15 for the drive to Guanajuato. We had to head back toward Mexico City and didn’t know how bad the traffic would be even though we were going to be skirting around the north side of the city. We found the roads without any problem but just as we were entering the highway toward Queretero (which we need to pass through along the way), we had our first experience with police corruption. A couple of Policia Federal cars parked along the side of the entrance ramp pulled us over and showed me what looked like a traffic law book that prohibited cars with foreign plates from circulating within the D.F. between 5 and 11 AM. When he mentioned that we were only 40 km from the border of the D.F. ... read more

We decided last night that there was not enough to merit staying a second night in Puebla so we made a change on the fly (called an audible in American football speak) to our original itinerary. We headed back over to the street with all the talavera shops and picked up a couple of items that hopefully will go with the bathroom in my house--can't remember the color at all, but hey, at least the toothbrush holder and soap tray will look nice. Also picked up some local sweets for the kids--hopefully those make it back without spoiling inside the car over the next week (or getting held up by our ever-vigilant customs officials when entering the US). Just as we were heading out of Puebla the police blocked off the main road so a demonstration ... read more
