This is going to be the shortest and most boring of my travel blogs so far. Yesterday, after I posted my blog, I went to a local restaurant near Seward called The Salmon Bake. Their motto (see photo) is "Cheap beer & lousy food". Actually the food was GREAT! I had the best salmon dinner I've ever eaten; fresh-caught, grilled salmon, garlic-butter rice, corn souffle and cornbread (and an Alaskan beer). Yum!! All I did today was retrace my steps from Seward back to Palmer. I didn't see anything new and it was raining for most of the day and all I did was drive. Tomorrow I'll be on a highway that I haven't traveled on yet, so hopefully I'll have some new sights to report on. Anyway, it feels good to be heading back towards ... read more

It rained hard last night but by morning it had stopped and it stayed dry all day, so I was able to log another rain-free day! It's getting cooler and breezier; fall is definitely in the air. Today I reached the end of the road in Seward and the end of the road for the first half of my trip. I drove to the southern tip of Seward which is the furthest point I will be from home via highways. I've now driven more than 3000 miles in the Miata and traveled another 480 miles on the Inland Passage ferry. Tomorrow I start the long journey home and to do that I need to drive north for two days before I can start heading east and then south. After driving north for two days I'll be ... read more

Well, it finally started raining, but before it did (at 3:00 pm) I managed to complete a great hike and drive most of the way to Seward. I'm going to call it a "mostly non-rainy day". To get to Seward I had to drive through Anchorage again this morning. Just east of Anchorage I took a little detour to Flattop Mountain and went hiking to the top. Flattop Mountain has an elevation of 3510 feet with an elevation gain of 1280 feet from the trailhead (that's a pretty hefty gain for a trail that's only about two miles long!). Yesterday at the bike rental shop I overheard two guys talking about their regular "runs" from the trailhead to the top of Flattop Mountain. One guy said he could do it in 25 minutes and the second ... read more

They've been predicting rain for the past two days, but it still hasn't arrived (yea!!). At 16 days into my trip, I've only had rain for two of those days and both of those were traveling days when I had no plans to hike or do anything outdoors. Pretty amazing! I went to Anchorage today, a city that some folks avoid and speak disparagingly of. Anchorage is to Alaska as Honolulu is to Hawaii; a typical, large, American city that seems out of place in a state that is otherwise so beautiful and enticing. Some Alaskans like to say that the only good thing about Anchorage is that it's just an hour's drive away from Alaska (i.e. when you're in Anchorage, you're not really in Alaska). When I was planning my trip, I read about an ... read more

Today was another low mileage driving day; spent most of the day hiking in Hatcher Pass. The weather was mostly cloudy with periods of light overcast and filtered sunshine. It's definitely cooler because of the clouds, but perfect for hiking (and still no rain!). I'm now at the half-way point of my trip; two weeks down and two weeks to go! The primary attraction at Hatcher Pass (elevation 3500 feet) is the old Independence Mine, a gold mining site that was active in the 30's and 40's and eventually closed for good in 1951. The gold here was mined underground by blasting tunnels, removing the ore, crushing the ore on site and using multiple techniques to extract the gold. It took a ton of ore to produce one ounce of gold! At its peak, the mine ... read more

I'm getting lazy; only drove 25 miles today! It was another great weather day; sunny all day (but the clouds are rolling in late this afternoon). Took a short drive to the Bodenburg Butte hiking trail; a moderately difficult climb to the top of a (you guessed it) "butte". The 360 degree views were excellent! On the way up the trail I kept hearing an intermittent sound that was like a drag-strip in the distance. When I got to the top, I could finally see the source of the noise in the valley below; there was a drag-strip in the distance (Labor Day races). Went to visit a nearby "musk ox farm" and was surprised at how much I enjoyed visiting these survivors from the Ice Age. The musk ox, which appear to be related to ... read more

Another sunny day with temps in the upper 60's. A local told me that today and yesterday were the warmest days of the summer this year. That's hard to believe, but I'm just happy to be here at the same time as the beautiful weather. I only did two things today; drove 150 miles (round trip) to visit Denali (Mt. McKinley) and then went to the Alaska State Fair that is held here in Palmer each year. On the way to Denali I drove through Wasilla. I wanted to stop and visit with Sarah, but I'm just too busy right now and I'm sure that she'll understand. Because it was a perfectly clear day in Wasilla, I tried to get a look at Russia but I'm afraid that my eyesight is just not as good as ... read more

What a fantastic day! The sun was shining all day, the afternoon temperatures were in the mid-60's, the top was down on the Miata all day, the fall foliage was abundant and colorful, the drive to Palmer was amazing and my new B&B is the best yet! If I could only spend one day in Alaska and today was it, then I'd be a happy man! (Sorry about the gushing, but it really WAS a special day). It's getting more difficult to decide "what" to take pictures of. At some of my stops I could stand in one spot and point my camera in 10 different directions and get 10 great shots. I always try to be conservative when taking scenic photos because, years from now, it's the shots with people in them that will be ... read more

Yesterday I went from Alaska to Canada (Yukon Territory); today I went from Canada back to Alaska. My 24 hours in Yukon Territory was marked by an almost constant drizzle; not enough to hinder views very much, but just wet enough that I had to keep the top up on the Miata. This morning started out dry, BUT I had to revise my goal of leaving the Miata top down at all times unless it was raining. Even though it was not raining when I started out this morning, it was 37 degrees and cloudy; a bit too numbing for me so early in the morning, so I left the top up and turned on the heater. After about an hour on the road and a stop for breakfast, it had “warmed” up to about 43 ... read more

First of all, thanks for the comments that some of you have posted on this web site! I really appreciate your feedback! I would love to respond to all of your comments, but at the end of the day when I've finally settled down and completed my travel blog, I'm really bushed and just feel like calling it a day. Anyway, it's good to know that you're following my adventure! Well, it had to rain sometime and it did today. The ferry arrived in Skagway where five large cruise ships were already in port and cruise passengers were crawling all over town. I knew in advance that it was going to be a busy cruise ship day, so my plans were to spend a couple of hours in town and then hit the road (and so ... read more
