Travelling mainly when I go overseas for conferences!

Today was a more relaxed day. In the morning I walked to Williams Sonoma to pick up some goodies for the kitchen - there was so much cool stuff there it was very hard to remain calm. Then I grabbed a bagel at a local cafe and walked home. I spent most of the day with Daniel. After chillin' at home, we went to Izzy's deli for lunch - a restaurant that claims to be the "deli to the stars". That aside, we had mini "sliders" (which a small sandwich/burger type things). I had two with pastrami and one with brisket and we shared sweet potato fries! YUM! We were definitely full after that experience. We then went to Daniel's school to run an errand and then back on track with some serious shopping at Nordstrom ... read more

Today started out a little too early - I woke up at 4:30am! I amused myself with reading and emailing and getting ready until about 9am at which time I walked to Blue Plate, one of my favourite restaurants in Santa Monica, for breakfast. It was so beautiful and sunny that I decided to sit outside to eat (a decision I would late regret). I had a supersmoothie, which has at least six diferent fruits in it and then the very LA egg white omelette. I'd never had one before, but it was actually rather tasty, with avocado, spinach, mushrooms and tomato in it and accompanied by an English muffin and tomato. Yum! With such good fuel, I decided to walk to Third St Promenade. I arrived at about 10am, which is just when the shops ... read more

After over an hour and a half sitting on the tarmac then getting through immigration and customs, it was such a relief to see Daniel and Jai waiting for me at the airport. When we walked out, I had this overwhelming sense of being home, which was strange since I only lived here for three months. However, I felt such an affinity for Los Angeles in that time that it really does feel like home. I'm even staying in the house in which I used to live, though it's significantly more crowded now that Taru and Antti have moved back to Finland and there are 5 people living here. I'm also staying in the lounge room, which seemed odd at first, but the air mattress is quite comfy. Daniel, Stephanie and Tyler (one of their housemates) ... read more

So the hotel was more annoying than first imagined - dodgy shower, noisy being next to the lift, rude staff, crap breakfast... but I asked for a room change and it was granted (so much better). Now that's off my chest, let me tell you about my one day in London. Having been in London two years ago and pretty much ticking off most tourist destinations, I was keen to have a slow travel day in London. I started out at the V&A, where I went on the introductory tour. Since I was last there, they've opened up a number of new permanent galleries so I wished I'd put aside more time for it. But as it's so big, it was good to do the tour to get a feel for the collections, particularly those I ... read more

Friday and Saturday were dedicated to a Postgraduate and Early Careers Workshops. For these two days we were split into two groups - one with Tanya Stivers (my group) and one with John Heritage (the other group). Our group also had Paul Drew, which was very cool. On Friday, one of the participants was unable to make it, so I was able to swap my session from last on Saturday to last on Friday. My data session went very well and I think was the 'high' of the three 'presentations' I had given over the last two weeks. Friday night was quiet - dinner on campus, talking through my PhD corrections with Maria and hanging out in my room. Saturday's sessions were good and we'd really started to work well as a group. As my session ... read more

The Conversation Analysis and Clinical Encounters meeting has been much anticipated in my academic calendar since attending in Plymouth two years ago. This year's has been alternatively challenging, inspiring, motivating, nerve-wreaking and educational. This three day meeting was just as good as two years ago, if not better. Particular highlights were the talks by Jeffrey Robinson, Nikki Britten and John Heritage (all fantastic contributions). I was too nervous for my talk, which was disappointing. There were lots of good papers and discussions and I have come away feeling excited about what is coming up next in my academic life. On Tuesday evening after dinner on campus, Israel and I headed into the city to take in the sights of York by night. We wandered around for a couple of hours and finished with a drink at ... read more

On Monday, Maria and I set off from the lovely Foulridge to York. Instead of driving straight there, we opted for a scenic adventure. We first drove toward Skipton, turning off just south of the town to head to Grassington. Stopping in Grassington, we found some information for our route and then wandered around the picturesque town centre. We then drove on Pateley Bridge. I must mention here that the drive over the whole day was just lovely. Very easy on the eye, with pleasing views of rolling farmland. Pateley Bridge was a little darker and sadder than Grassington, but we still stopped for tea and scones before head onwards to the Brimham Rocks. The countryside changed a little as we headed further into Nidderdale, remained pleasing. Brimham Rocks were rather impressive. These natural structures seems ... read more

Saturday morning was a great opportunity for Maria and I to sleep in and we both did. After breakfast and packing, I walked to the car hire place nearby to pick up our car while Maria finished packing and cleaning up. I then picked up Maria and we drove back to the hire place to put her on as a driver. We were off! Thanks to the good directions of the Hertz attendant, combined with google maps directions and those of the cottage owner, we made our way in good time to “Toad Hall” (only getting lost once on the way and then in trying to find the place). Toad Hall is a two-bedroom semi-detached (?) terrace house in Foulridge (which is a much pleasanter place than the name suggests). We settled in pretty quickly, not ... read more

Friday morning was another early start, even earlier for me as I woke up at 6am, an hour before I needed to. We made it to the university in good time for the first session at 8:30am. Enough time even for me to pick up the book I put on hold on morality of knowledge in conversation. The first session was on lying (and I'd be lying if I said I loved it - there were two good talks at least). After morning tea, I then went to a session on laughter. I then walked into town for some sightseeing. I started at the Town Hall, which was beautiful inside, though I couldn't see much of it as a lot was closed off from the public. I then wandered around to the John Rylands library. After ... read more

Mid-week was already upon us, so I set aside Wednesday morning to work on my thesis corrections. It was a very productive morning, so I rewarded myself with the afternoon off. Maria and I went on a walking tour of Manchester. Our guide looked (and even acted) somewhat like Bilbo Baggins and quite often went off on tangents. However, that did not detract from his excellent tour guiding. We saw the beautiful gothic-style town hall, little laneways, the John Rylands Library, Lincoln Square (where we experienced our first Manchester rain), canals, the Midland Hotel, railways, warehouses and so much more. We heard about the industrial revolution, the progress of science and meteorology, the advent of passenger railways and standardised time, political movements and massacres, and technological and mechanical firsts. This was Manchester, but only such a ... read more
