This experience has been incredible. I could write pages and pages about this trip, but I covered just about everything in the last 22 blog posts. I have learned to much and absolutely fell in love with the people and culture in Thailand. I learned... 1. The culture of Thailand absolutely revolves around hospitality. The people express it everywhere you go, and people are so kind everywhere you look. 2. The public health care system is funded by the government, which means that health care providers have limited resources, but they really do what they can despite these limits. 3. No matter how different or uncomfortable something is, it is so much more important to respect someone else's culture rather than sticking to what you know. I also learned that rice can really be eaten for ... read more

It felt no different than any other day as I woke up this morning. It definitely didn't feel like the last day. This morning we had one last plan before the endless hours of travel ahead of us. We got in our uniforms one more time and went to a community center near the college and from there went to a house in the community that desperately needed cleaned. A family lived there and all but one family member had disabilities. We helped clean the house with some of the BCNC students and it was pretty sad to see. I know there are places like this in America, even places close by to our homes, but to actually be in someones house like this was saddening. The students spend a lot of time in a certain ... read more

I slept in so late this morning! I woke up at 9:30am. We got ready and then ate brunch and then waited around for a little while before the van came to take us to the lake again!! This was such a good way to spend the day. Of course I would have loved to go to the beach, but this was the next best option. We laid around in the sun all afternoon and it was great. And of course, we got drinks. I got an amazing iced caramel macchiato and a little later I got a mango smoothie. It just felt like summer in January as we sat around outside talking to each other in the sun with an iced beverage in hand. Right before we left to come to the lake this morning, ... read more

This morning I got up and made myself look business casual despite my exhaustion. This was one of the hardest days to wake up for sure. I ate a very quick breakfast of a banana and peanut butter and we headed down to the conference room. The topic of today's conference was domestic violence and the nursing response. I was responsible for presenting today with Rebecca and Carly. There were 4 schools at BCNC who presented about domestic violence in the area that they lived in. The topic is much more sensitive in Thailand because often information is kept private and within families and sensitive topics like this are not talked about as often as in the United States. However, this is an important topic and we presented information about the prevalence and resources available for ... read more

At the beginning of our trip when we visited the Donkaew Community Center, we scheduled massages. Today was the day. We all got hour long massages at the same time, and it was definitely a little painful at times. Thai massage is not at all like a typical Swedish massage given in America. "It hurts so good" is definitely the motto for this style of massage. I'm not quite sure how beneficial it was...I actually felt like I needed a massage after I got a massage! We came back and I sat outside and worked on our powerpoint for our presentation the next day and then we had lunch. In the afternoon, we went to the Bangkok Chang Mai Hospital which is a private hospital. The private hospitals are so different than the public hospitals in ... read more

Today I decided that I am officially a pro at squatting to go to the toilet. I woke up so excited for the day to come and it did not disappoint. A banana and peanut butter was the perfect breakfast before we headed to the Maetaman Elephant Camp. It was about 45 minutes away, but I knew we were close when we passed an elephant casually walking down the road. When we first got there, I was absolutely amazed. This was definitely one of the things I had been looking forward to the most for this trip. I was so excited to see all of the elephants! They were all around us and there were so many. We bought some food and fed a couple elephants that were in the very front, and we saw two ... read more

Waking up without an alarm today was amazing. This morning was very laid back. I had some time to sit outside and it was so beautiful. In the mornings here it's usually like 70-75 degrees, sunny and clear skies. It gets hot really quickly though. We had a cooking class this morning and we cooked so many different Thai dishes. I was in charge of making green curry chicken. We also made red curry chicken, Pad Thai, papaya salad, and tab tim grobs which is a Thai dessert made from water chestnuts in coconut milk. The Pad Thai was definitely my favorite. We sat down with all of our buddies and ate lunch and played some games at the table. After lunch, we left for the rest of the day. Some of our buddies came with ... read more

I ate a banana for breakfast. For most people, this would not be a significant thing. For me, it is. I ate my first whole banana today and I'm very proud of myself. I ate it with peanut butter, but still. After 22 years of life, this was a notable part of my day. Today was our last day in the hospital. Well, we actually spent most of our day in the Thai traditional medicine clinic, but technically it's part of the hospital. To say the least, it was not what I expected. My expectations included getting a long, relaxing Thai massage. However, when we walked in and everyone seemed pretty confused, I had a feeling this might not be happening. I was right. We walked around the tiny clinic and saw a lactation massage for ... read more

No. Morning. Ceremony. I wasn't mad about the extra 45 minutes of sleep. We drove over to the hospital for day 4 and got there around 9. I was more encouraged today because we had a shorter day ahead of us than the rest of the week. I got to my unit and shortly after we got there, I got to go observe in the NICU! I loved it so much. I spent a lot of my morning there and it was so great. I got to hold some babies, assess some babies and learn about some babies. It actually made me think I could work in a NICU for a while as a nurse. After the NICU, we walked over to one of the cardiac units that had a heart catheterization lab connected to it. ... read more

Back to the hospital. This was our last full day. We got to the unit and less than 10 minutes after arriving and starting bed baths, our preceptor told us we were going to the OR. I was so excited! We walked quite a long way to get there, but when we did, we gowned, gloved, masked and hair netted up. Not to mention we changed our shoes to crocs. I got to see an entire surgery of a tumor being removed from the spinal cord. It was crazy. The surgeon was so laid back and very nice. He spoke English and was so kind to explain what he was doing. In the OR, he answered 3 phone calls during the surgery! It was hilarious. The one phone call he took was right before he cut ... read more
