We decided to drive down south of the border into the town of San Felipe which is on the other side of Baja facing the Sea of Cortez. It's way smaller than Ensenada or Rosarito and less frequented by visitors although you would find everything you need to make your stay comfortable and relaxing. The drive is about a couple of hours from the border city of Mexicali and the highway is, overall, excellent except for some rough patches of asphalt in some sections. And due to the high volume of drug trafficking that's been going on in this part of the world, you would run into a a couple of checkpoints which I thought was done courteously and professionally.
