Great Record Rafe sorry I missed you in your brief touchdown before returning to school. In case the internet explodes tomorrow (it COULD happen) be sure to make copies of this in your own hard dirve. These musings are GREAT !!! I know I've learned a lot. Thanks for bringing us into the loop.
i love youtube and ofori rafe, my music buddy! i like this one, too. thanks for sharing these sounds. i have some new ones for you, too! welcome home buddy. hope you're happy to be back.
All right! So how do you celebrate your last night in ghana? I enjoyed the music blog very much. Amazing how much american music feeds back to the countries where we got our music originally. See you soon, kid! dad
beach is waiting. Hey Lil bro, i am counting on your help and support for a music in September sounds like your tastes are now a bit broader. Nice music review, i can't wait to hear the sounds.
Sounds like a great night....The manny trade was all the buzz on the jobsite courtesy of ray the electrician. You can imagine! Green or red sauce for you????
Re: the curse of the man-mino That was the first thing I checked on this morning. I think it was time for him to move-on. Look for a sudden winning streak from the Sox with the big headache gone. Besides batting average, Bay basically has Manny's numbers for this season, is younger and cheaper, so I'm happy with how it worked out.
Re: agreed C'mon Kate, you know you love Focus Groups. Glad to hear the Lonely Planet type entries are appreciated too. Hopefully I'll see a few more sights before leaving that I can tell you about.
agreed rafe, i totally agree with pia. although i knew this side of you, it doesn't come out nearly as much when talking about focus groups or access to housing. so, your last two posts have been so dreamy in that "taking me there" way. i can almost smell the fish market or the damp dungeon walls. thanks for sharing. i love it. when do we get to read the novel?
thanks Aw, now I'm blushing. Thanks Pia, that was a nice little mid-afternoon boost as I write, write, and write some more of this darn report.
As for keeping this going post Ghana, I don't know if writing about a policy paper or our intramural sports conquest will be interesting enough in comparison, but I think I like this approach to staying in touch with people for future travels, so much easier than mass emails or total silence.
Rafe, I know you are a smart cookie and I thought I knew you pretty well - but you've been hiding the soul of a poet. You realise I'm going to be lobbying you to keep this blog going when we get back to NC - or at very least to show me the pictures from Elmina Port. This is wonderful stuff. P xoxo
thanks Rafe, thanks for these honest words written so close to your visit ... it is important to witness ... not easy to process ... but you have taken an excellent stab at it here.
Re: Are you SURE ???? I know, it is almost too much for my desperately missing Mexican food soul to bear. I think a trip to Zapotec will be on the short list when I get home.
llamada perdida This "flashing" thing used to happen all the time in Spain with my friends. When they ran out of coin on their phone, they would make a "lost call" by hanging up just as it rang, i was supposed to know to call back NOT TEXT-as texting would have cost them money!
You could thwart this by being really quick on the pick-up and shocking folks.
I miss you lots out here in Oakland. Please bring me back presents, that should make up for the missing you part.
how to avoid said crisis in the future I have read somewhere that elephants are actually scared of white asses. So when faced with crazed and charging devil beast, drop trou and hope for the best.
Re: "Common Law" Good to have you back on board Buko, and to hear you're getting along well with the Canadians already. I still don't have an answer about the street justice question either. I think you're right that "just enough" is too hard to define, and that's really the problem with the way they handle thieves, even if it does provide good results overall for society here.
"Common Law" If punishment is meant to deter an act, how does enforcement actually work? In other words, the act needs to be committed to ensure punishment to ensure the act properly deterred; effectively testing if the threat of punishment is real. So how much punishment is needed to ensure the threat of it deters the act? Ideally it's the "just enough" strategy but that is difficult to find. What makes troubles worse is that "more than enough" punishment will work only slightly better than "just enough" at getting the same solution but at a much higher cost. However, observers see only the outcome (deterred acts) and rarely see the threat (punishment). I don't have a good answer to this.
god bless . . . what is the name of that country again? A day late is not a worry. I celebrated Canada Day on July 1st instead of the 4th (well only on the exterior, on the interior the stars and bars will always hold true). The funny thing is, and probably just to be a pain in the ass, i barbed the locals as to whether Canadia was 26 years old or over 200. Nothing like ruffling the feathers of locals. As for your embezzler, you should get him back on the payroll - you have smoked him out and now he can hook you up with some deals as long as you leave a small profit to grease the wheels.
So the true reveals itself Rafer - been a few weeks behind on the blogo (this is the first post i am reading in a month - i know i am a horrible friend). So I have to say that it took you this long to realize you are not wedding planner? Stick with being a profane clergy.
Love the anecdote. I did not tip parking attendant at WT school this AM when I went to get beach sticker and was directed to stay clear of area for Flea market-which is now at WT school as it outgrew Middle Road site. Bet Accra is even more hot and humid than WT this AM.
website below has enjoyable description of Mole National Park, which RKM's other fans may enjoy reading.
