Africa » Egypt » Western Desert » Siwa Oasis January 29th 2012

After a pretty uncomfortable 7.5 hour journey, where some guy insisted on leaving the window open all the way meaning no sleep was had, we arrived in Siwa at about 5.30 a.m. There were two Chinese and a Japanese also on the bus and I managed to share a taxi to the hotel with them. When I say taxi, I mean a trailer with 2 benches attached to the back of a moped. After the night before I slept on until after 12. I was woken up to the sound of gun fire and the noise of a crowd. I had been lead to believe that this was a small, sleepy town but when I got up and wandered around town there was a stage set up in the main square, which was packed. There was ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Mediterranean » Alexandria » Borg El Arab January 27th 2012

I checked out of the Canada Hostel and got the Metro to the Turgoman bus station. I was lucky to get on a bus straight away and was on my way to Alexandria. For most of the 3 hour bus journey it was very sunny and looked like it was going to be a very nice day. Then about half an hour before arriving in Alexandria, the clouds started to gather and it started to lash rain. The Irish curse strikes again. After I got off the bus, I fended off the taxi drivers and went looking for a minibus going into town. One guy asked me where I was going, brought me straight to the minibus and got in himself. On the bus he and the other passengers were asking for my opinion on what ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Lower Egypt » Giza » Mohandessin January 26th 2012

I woke up today later than planned as I hadn't had the best sleep the night before with demonstrations continuing on Tahrir Square well into the night. At breakfast I got talking to a doctor about the same age as me from Alexandria who was down for the Anniversary the day before. However, he said he wasn't there to celebrate, but to ensure that revolution was enforced. His attitude was different to the general atmosphere the day before, but he was certainly representative of what some people felt about the anniversary. I got a bus from near Tahrir out to Giza this time for the Pyramids. As we got close an Egyptian guy helped me to get off at the right spot. I was pretty ignorant to him after the day before, expecting him to try ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Lower Egypt » Cairo January 25th 2012

I was woken up fairly early to the sound of loudspeakers coming from Tahrir Square. Today was the one year Anniversary of when the Revolution began in Egypt, which ended Mubarak's rule. Nobody was sure what would happen today as the military have remained in power despite elections being held and promises that power would be handed over. I left the hostel and walked around the streets around Tahrir Square. There was more of a festive atmosphere than anything else, although I did come across one or two marches with people holding pictures of people who had died. Amidst the celebratory atmosphere, it was easy to forget that today was also the anniversary of the deaths of many people's loved ones. Having spent some time seeing what was going on, I decided to head out to ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Lower Egypt » Cairo » Mohandessen January 24th 2012

Having finally managed to pull myself away from Dahab, I got the nightbus with Josh who I had met at Penguin. The fact he has lived in Cairo definitely took the edge off arriving into this city of chaos after a nightbus from Dahab, which seemed like a dream after a few hours. I checked into the Canadian Hostel, which is just off Tahrir Square. We went for a look around Tahrir square, got some breakfast and then met up for coffee with one of Josh's mates. Later, I walked out to Islamic Cairo and checked out Khan El Khalili. Walking through Cairo is an adventure in itself. Crossing the street is taking your life in your hands, but I've become quite adept at using other people as buffers. Another thing about walking around Cairo is ... read more

Africa » Egypt » Sinai » Dahab January 17th 2012

I arrived at Nuweiba port at about 7.30 a.m. after a freezing cold, sleepless ferry journey. I managed to get some Egyptian money, Visa and went looking for a bus to Dahab. Unfortunately I realised that it had gone at 6.30 and there wasnt another one until 10.30. After 2 nights with very little sleep I eventually agreed to get a taxi for 100 LE. As soon as I got to Dahab, I found Penguin Village and pretty much slept for the day and night, getting some food and arranging my diving for the next day. I started the PADI Open Water Diving Course the next day and finished it 2 days later. Having got the Certificate, I decided to do 2 of the Advanced dives in the Canyon and the Blue Hole. The Blue Hole ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » South » Wadi Rum January 15th 2012

After breakfast in Wadi Musa we met our guide, Jame, who took us in his 4x4 to Wadi Rum. As we left Petra and went higher up, we were reminded how cold it had been with snow still on the mountains. About an hour later we arrived in the desert in Wadi Rum. We went on safari through the desert for about 3 hours stopping at various sites such as Lawrence's House and the 7 Pillars of Wisdom. The sits themselves werent that great but the desert and the scenery were spectacular. We ended up at the camp and tried to get up a mountain for sunset but were about 15 minutes late. Back at the camp we were joined by a German couple who were doing the safari the next day. Other than that the ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » South » Petra January 12th 2012

We woke up early in Madaba as we had to go back to Amman to get the bus to Petra. Luckily, the bus station we pulled into from Madaba was the same as the one we needed to be in to get the bus to Petra. It took us about 4 hours to get down to Petra after waiting the best part of an hour for the bus to fill up in Amman. We found our hostel in Petra, put our bags down and made our way as quick as possible to Petra to get the most out of the remaining sunlight. The sun was setting at around 5.30 and we got in at about 3 o'clock, so we thought we only had a couple of hours. However, after climbing up way above the Royal Tombs, ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » West » Madaba » Sweimeh January 11th 2012

Bad start to today with their being no hot water for a shower. The hotel said there were was hot water between 7-9 a.m. every day, but at 8.30 there was nothing. This was despite there being hardly anyone staying in the hotel. I mentioned it to the receptionist, but he didn't seem too interested. I was happy enough to be checking out of the Farah Hotel. We decided to go check out the Citadel in Amman before going to Madaba. It was much better than expected and it was good to be at one of the highest points of the city just before leaving to see all of the spots we had been in. The ruins were also pretty impressive. We then went and got our bus to Madaba, which took a lot longer than ... read more

Middle East » Jordan » West » Dead Sea January 10th 2012

The Hotel was so quiet that the tours they often run to the Dead Sea weren't happening due to lack of numbers. So we had decided we would take the bus to Bethany and the Dead Sea, even though it seemed that this would be very tough. When we went to get a taxi to the bus station, we managed to reach an agreement with the driver to take us to both places and back, while waiting for us at each for 30 JD. This saved us a lot of hassle and I'm not sure if we ultimately could have done all we did that day with just public transport. The first stop was Bethany, the place where it is claimed that Jesus was baptised by John. The site itself is not all that impressive and ... read more
