Staring While some of the staring is harmless, there are other times in Ningbo it is not--let's be fair. While not everyone treats foreigners bad, yells at them, is blatantly rude, refuses to listen to them, etc, etc...it does happen--daily. I've been repeatedly shoved by a kid, with onlooking parents, doing nothing about it and giggling. I have also been called "white devil" by a school kid, family again, aware. Life can be uncomfortable here. People who treat people a certain way know they are making life uncomfortable. Do I get it? Yes. Do I enjoy it. No. Does it happen a lot? Yes.
more vegetarian recommendations in Shanghai After finding it extremely difficult to find vegetarian food and places to eat in Shanghai, I decided to blog my experiences to help new travellers to Shanghai. I agree with the writer of this blog. It is possible to be a vegetarian in Shanghai and have a good experience while doing so. I have begun compiling a list of places to eat and have posted some pictures on my blog - hope that is of use to any of the readers of this blog. My post can be found at: http://krishna869.vox.com/library/post/being-a-vegetarian-in-shanghai.html
celebrity the staring thing is really interesting. As China opened up for the west only some decades ago, most ppl in China have never seen a foreigner. This is even more so in small cities like Ningbo. I am glad you guys take it easily and didn't get offended. I gave you credit on that. You can call that a culture difference, curiosity or whatever, it's just something you will have to get used to. Just keep in mind, they mean no harm--you are being 'stared' at as celebrities, but you are treated as celebrities at same time.
CCTV just FYI, there are actually over 100 channels (CCTV has only 8 or 9 channels) available for the Chinese audiences. It is just another misconception that Chinese can only watch programs from the 'state-run' Medias. yes, most of the stations are owned either by the central government or provincial governments. But there are still a lot of stations/Medias that are privately owned. Especially in the south, say Guangdong province, ppl have unrestricted access to the free Hong Kong TV programs over the air.
usually:
1. thin; usually thin means a good shape, so diet or Weight Loss product are very welcome now. The fat was thought as beauty only in Tang Dyn;
2. white; I guess the white concept of Chinese may be different from western style; Chinese white is really white and the skin is very delicate, no spot. Western white seems not really white, actually red.
3. Big Breast. Haha, this is not accepted by all. But some Chinese women boost their breast. (I do not know the percentage). It seems a lot pop starts(especially Korean stars) do this. So also there are a news about fake breast.
