Villa de Leyva After reading your blog, I think that I need to go to this town. My husband and I are going to Bogota in August. We hadn't considered a side trip until we read your blog. I have a blog on this site too. Check out Everette's blog.
One of Us I think that being Colombian is appreciating what this country and its culture are, you are now one of us. Colombia and its people will always welcome you back as one of its own. Thank you for keeping me entertained all these weeks, I've been vicariously travelling through you. Im now in the states. Best of luck on the rest of your journey. : )
I am glad Dear Turists,
I am glad everything worked out and hope that Yissel got her medicine on time. Your story kept on suspense until you found the cabana Costenita. My husband and I travel every other year to Colombia: Cartagena, El valle, Pereira, Quindio. We usually hired a driver from the town I am from (we agree on the cost, he pays for his own hotels and we paid for his food and tolls. We never travel during the evening. The only scarry situation we experienced was in Cartagena at the hotel Caribe when we were surrounded by the army all armed not pointing of us but blocking us with out explanation - my husband does not speak a word of spanish so you can imagine how he felt, one of the soldiers noticed him getting very nervous and they explained to us that the president was visiting the hotel. Colombia is beautiful!
P.S. Very generous of you to take out the food and give it away.
I enjoyed your Semana Santa post. I have always wanted to see the processions. My blog is looking for travel photos, stories, accommodation reviews, and food reviews. If you have the time and have some to share, email us at dirtyhippiesblog@gmail.com or check us out at dirty-hippies.blogspot.com
Continued fun on your travels,
Eric
Re: Caldas Superb! Many thanks for the history lesson! Isn't the Internet a wonderful thing folks?
Right now I'm sitting in a bar in a cold and rainy Quito - and very much missing the warm Colombian climate :-(
Well, at least I'm in a bar, I suppose ;-)
Chris
Caldas Hi Chris, Caldas was a scientist, military, geographer, botanist, astronomer, naturalist, journalist and patriot of Colombia. For his erudition and vast knowledge of many subjects was known to his contemporaries as the Wise, epithet which has passed into history. He was born in Popayán and died in Bogotá. He help to free the country from the spaniards. You are right, in every single town in Latin America (at least in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru y Bolivia) there is a plaza de Bolivar, for the guy that libertates this 5 countries (a single country by that time called La Gran Colombia) and whose political project Venezuela's president Hugo Chavez wants to continue on this days (in a very bad, misunderstood way.)
Saludos!
@Stef Hi Stef. Pleased you enjoyed the post.
The hotel in Guatapé was Hotel Real (if I remember correctly). It was OK but really nothing special.
There seems to be a good directory of hotels / cabins etc in the area here:

Hope you have a great time in Medellín (and Guatapé)! I'm sure that you will. Just don't forget the sunblock :)
Chris
pinballwizard64@hotmail.com Great report and pics! Planning a trip to Medillen and def wanna check out Guatape overnight. Do you remember the hotel you stayed at? Trying to find rooms there and having trouble.
thanks
RE: Hola Hi Neil. Good to hear from you matey. How are things going with you both? I'm not sure how long I'll be in Quito but as soon as I know where I'm staying I'll drop your brother a line.
Look forward to seeing you in June :)
C
Hola Give Matthew my brother a shout whilst you are in Quito. His email addy is matthewdownunder@hotmail.co.uk
I think he misses speaking native English and he can tell you what's what.
He seems to live in Pichincha which slightly disturbingly appears to be an active volcano.
Anyway, hope all is going splendidly and enjoy the blogs!
RE: Cheers for the info Hi Gary
Thanks for your kind words - pleased to know that you people can make use of my lessons learned. I'm sure you're going to have a blast over here! :)
Thanks again.
Chris
Cheers for the info Great blog, thanks for the info on the hostels, they look great, you are right about hostel world there is not a lot on there!. Heading there in mid April after Peru. Then onto Taganga, Tyrona and finally a boat if we can find one to go to San Blas and Panama.
Cheers,
Gary
@Gav Yeah, I figured as much. Although I'm acutely aware that I'm taking musical advice from a guy who holds up Kraftwerk as the pinnacle of modern music :)
Interestingly I've not been asked for directions yet - bit disappointed really :)
Hope you're well matey.

zoos Such a shame about your burnt skin but I'm sure it's not the first time you have awoken feeling sore ;-)
Sod the animals in a zoo.. lets concentrate on people getting the chance to see them. That's far more important!! LOL

Unaccustomed as I am to public writing, I'll keep this short.
So the plan is to jet off to Bogotá 15th February, take in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina...and maybe a quick dip into Uruguay for good measure. I just have to make sure that I reach Buenos Aires on or before 31st May for my flight home.
And this is where it's going to be documented...the good bits and the bad bits...hope there won't be too many of those!
I'm pretty useless at keeping things updated so Im going to try to get into the habit by starting now - 1 month (ish) from de... full info
