Asia » Brunei » Bandar Seri Begawan April 10th 2011

30 March – Brunei Darussalem Arrived in Brunei after a pleasant 3 hour flight from Hong Kong. The temperature was a balmy 25 degrees, so a tad warmer than where we had come from. Checked into the Rizqun International Hotel and as it was dark, settled into the room and decided to skip dinner as we were well fed on the flight. 31 March – Brunei Spent the day exploring the immediate area around the hotel which is located in downtown Gadong (Bandar Seri Begawan is the other direction) including the 3 story shopping mall adjacent to the hotel. The town is not geared up for tourists so the shops were just local boutiques and department stores. Adjourned to the airconditioned luxury of our room and watched a movie before we ventured out to have a ... read more

Asia » Hong Kong » Kowloon March 29th 2011

28 March – Hong Kong By the time I had woken up this morning, the ship was docked alongside the Ocean Terminal, Victoria Harbour in Kowloon (Hong Kong). After breakfast we ventured through the huge terminal which is 5 levels of high end shops and found our way to the post office and then to Nathan Road to meet friends. First impression of Hong Kong – bustling, vibrant, modern and the most double decker buses I have ever seen in one place. We were to find out later the next day that public transport is very easy to use and very inexpensive. I had wanted to buy a leather jacket, so I visited a tailor shop and before I knew was being measured. This was approximately 10:30am. I was asked to come back at 12:00 – ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Seoul » Jongno-gu » Gwanghwamun March 28th 2011

24 March – Incheon, South Korea We entered the Port of Incheon at 5:30am this morning through a lock system. This keeps the harbour water level constant and not reliant on tides. On the way to our berth, we passed a holding yard for cars and I have never seen so many new cars in one spot! There must have been tens of thousands of them – all white! I had organised to go on a tour to Seoul, while Barrie decided to go explore Incheon. Seoul is 23 kilometres away, however the trip took about an hour due to peak hour traffic; not unlike the M1 to Brisbane. There is a fairly good road system, but still the traffic was heavy. Seoul is situated in a valley with mountains to the north, south and east ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Great Wall of China March 22nd 2011

21 March – Beijing. Great Wall and Ming Tombs Took the 3 hour journey to outer Beijing to visit the Ming Tombs and the Great Wall which gave us the opportunity to see a bit of the countryside. The port area that we are in – just outside Tianjin – is being developed as a huge commercial / industrial region and as such there is a lot of earthworks going on where the land is being reclaimed. Also, there are overhead roads and factories being constructed. After about half an hour the scenery changed to that of farmland, with crops of wheat, millet and rice. Little communities (communes) are scattered here and there and until a few decades ago, these farmers were working the land only to give all their harvest to the government. These days, ... read more

Asia » China » Tianjin » Huangyuguan March 22nd 2011

19 March 2011 Qingdao (pronounced Chengdow) Arrived alongside Qingdao wharf at approximately 7:00am this morning to be greeted by lion dancers (not the Billy Ray Cyrus type as Barrie had thought!) and a Chinese drum and brass band. It is not as cold as it has been, so we were looking forward to going ashore on the German Heritage Tour. Qingdao is still emerging as a tourist destination and is touted as “a dynamic city on the east coast of China’s Shandong Province”. I think they have a long way to go to live up to such a statement as my first impressions were not enhanced during our tour of the city. Everything was shabby verging on the ramshackle and a thin layer of dust blanketed everything including cars, buildings and trees. Every now and then, ... read more

Asia » China » Shanghai » Pudong March 17th 2011

This morning after breakfast, we decided to take a walk to the Bund Riverside area. It was a lovely spring day; the sun was shining, so it wasn't as cold as it has been for the past couple of days. Walking the streets of Shanghai is quite an experience, as there seems to be very little regard for the road rules and pedestrians are on the lower end of the pecking order. You learn quite quickly to not only look left and right, but to look behind, in front and every way in between. Pedestrian crossings are just lines on the road, and not the sanctuary that we take for granted in Australia. We found by accident, the Bund Sightseeing tunnel which is a tram ride under the river. The amazing thing though is the kaleidoscope ... read more

Asia March 16th 2011

Today in Shanghai. Started the day with a lovely buffet breakfast on the 18th floor with views over the river. Sent Barrie to get the coffee and he came back with tea and soy milk! Got it wrong on both counts. Strolled down the street to Nanjing Road mall; one of the busiest shopping malls in Shanghai. Bought a jumper and a pair of boots to stave off the colder weather that we will encounter further north. The sun was shining all day and being in shops most of the time didn't feel too cold. Went searching for some Chanel headbands and scarves and ended up following this local down side streets and over bridges to some market. Passed all sorts of shops sellling everything from shoes, electrical components, food, ball bearings - practically anything you ... read more

Asia » China March 16th 2011

Nihao, everyone. I have finally been able to log on to this website from the PC in our hotel room, so I bring you my first ever blog on our travels. Our first experience with flying with Royal Brunei was very positive. More leg room, wider aisles and (seemingly insignificant, but very relevant) the toilets were more spacious. The service was first class and to top it off, the plane was only about a third full, so Barrie and I both had a whole row of seats to stretch out and sleep. Breakfast was a choice of chicken and rice, or beef bacon and quiche. I thoroughly misunderstood this and thought the steward said "Beef and bacon" so I chose this option, thinking that it was odd that a muslim oriented airline was serving pork product! ... read more
