Today was a long day on a bus. We started by checking out of our hostel around 7:15 and walking to the Royal Mile where we boarded our tour bus to see the Highlands. We don't normally like travelling by tour bus, but we really had no choice here, because we don't have a car, and the Highlands are a big place! We stopped at a few other places for photo-ops or little towns (which didn't have a whole lot of anything) just so the driver could take a break. The map above basically shows the route we took, but the highlights of the day involved visiting Glencoe - the site of the 1692 massacre of the MacDonald Clan by the Campbell Clan - and Loch Ness. The story of the MacDonald massacre goes something like ... read more

We spent the day today walking through Edinburgh and visiting as many nooks and crannies of the city as we could. Suffice to say, the city is absolutely gorgeous and we have added it to the list of places we wish we could live in. We tried to get a sense for the city as a whole by walking through the New town and Old Town, both with very different architecture. The old part of Edinburgh was the original area which existed during the middle ages, so it has typical medieval achitecture. It includes the Royal Mile, which we spent lots of time walking up and down (it runs from the Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Hollyrood- the Queen's current home in Scotland and the previous home of Mary, Queen of Scots. We didn't have ... read more

Today we woke up at the unholy hour of 5am, left our warm, comfy bed in London for the 7am train to Edinburgh. The train is much more costly than a bus, so at £45 per person each way, versus £17 per person for the bus, we opted to take the train one way (to see the scenery) and the night bus home. The train today was just so easy (only 4.5 hours) so I'm sure on Monday morning we will be kicking ourselves for being so cheap (the bus takes 9 hours). Today was a beautiful day. Once the sun came up, it was sunny all the way. It was a really nice ride through the green English countryside with the rolling hills. We went through some nice towns, but the most beautiful part of ... read more

Today we set out on a quest to see the coast of Wales - by foot. The city of Cardiff itself is not right on the coast (the water being the Bristol channel which eventually goes out to the Atlantic) but a borough of the city, called Cardiff Bay, sits (surprise!) on Cardiff Bay. The actual bay is separated from the channel by a series of large locks. We'd heard that Cardiff Bay (the city) is known for being one of Europe's most modern waterfront complexes, so we wanted to check it off the list. So we started walking in what we thought was the right direction, and didn't feel the need to consult a map. We were going the right way, but what we didn't realize was that we were on the wrong side of ... read more

We've been finding that much of the UK would be better explored by car. In the interest of saving money, though, and not wanting to drive on the wrong side of the road, this isn't possible for us. So we've been trying to find ways to get out of the cities and see a bit of the countryside on our short weekend breaks (which is a hard thing to do). So we bought a day pass for the train, and rode the rails along a scenic circle route that they call the "Heart of Wales" line. First, the train headed out from Cardiff west towards the 2nd biggest city in Wales called Swansea. Unfortunately we had to leave early (7am) so it was still dark for quite awhile longer and we couldn't see whether or not ... read more

This morning we hopped on a coach and 3 hours later we were in Cardiff, Wales. As soon as you get into wales, you realize you're in a different country because every sign is in both welsh and English. Welsh is so confusing looking because words consist of a long array of consonants, and I can't imagine how many of the words are pronounced. Fortunately most people in wales speak English (they take both english and welsh at school). Cardiff is quite a small city, and you can tell that it was heavily bombed during the 2nd World War because the buildings are generally very new. It was a big target because of its port and because of the large coal mining industry of the region. When we arrived, we spent a bit of time wandering ... read more

On Sunday, we decided to get out of the city and see some of the countryside of Western England. At the last minute, we found the most cost effective way to do so was by taking a tour (Anderson Tours). We got picked up in London early in the morning by the company, and as it turned out, there were only 3 people (including us) on the tour. It was a nice tour because the guide explained everything to us on the bus and then we got off to explore on our own for a few hours. So it was a nice quiet day. Our first stop was at Avebury, a village known for being surrounded by the largest stone circle in the world. This is a much less touristy site than Stonehenge, and we could ... read more

So now we're settling down into life in London, and Mike has survived his first week back at school. It reminds us that we're not really on vacation, and that there is a real purpose as to why we're here.... but we still have the weekends to travel. Mike usually has Fridays and Monday mornings, so we'll have more time to travel, but this weekend he had to go to class on Friday so we stayed local for the weekend. This is fine because there's just so much to see here, that there's never a dull moment! On Saturday we stuck around London, and spent much of the day in Hyde Park. Because we are missing the accessibility of our beloved Bixi bikes (for those who don't know, they're the bike share program that recently started ... read more

We're a bit behind on our blog entries, but we thought that we would start catching up on the most recent event and work backwards. Stay tuned for entries on our first few days coming up soon!! Today we decided to finally get out of London and experience a different part of the UK, so we headed to Oxford to visit the famous university. Mike had already been there, but we decided to go away for the day at such a short notice that Oxford was the cheapest place we could get to. So in the morning, we rushed over to Victoria station (during rush hour, and so many people were crammed like sardines into the little train cars that a train or two left without us being able to board) and caught a coach to ... read more

Wow. Welcome to London, indeed! We landed in Heathrow around noon, picked up our Oyster cards and packed all of our luggage to the tube station for the final stretch of our journey home. Of course, saying it like this makes it sound so simple... but we had a lot of luggage! So, it wasn't that simple at all! We loaded all of our stuff onto the Picadilly Line train, and sat down for the hour or so journey into town. The train slowly filled up, and by the time we got into London proper, the train was so packed that there was no way we could get our stuff off the train! We were very worried that we wouldn't be able to get our bags through the crowd, but luckily, by the time we got ... read more
