Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Ayers Rock October 5th 2010

Touched down in Uluru Airport and the first thing Sarah and me said to each other was "now we're in proper Australia", it was red desert everywhere. We were booked into the Ayers Rock Resort, which is like a huge butlins consisting of 3 hotels, 1 campsite, 1 shopping area with a couple of cafes/restaurants and one the lodge (The Outback Lodge) which was where we were staying and had dorms and lodges and the only bar in the whole of the resort. But at $5 for a 3/4 pint we weren't going to be celebrating this fact. The dorm was really basic, i.e. 10 bunk beds in a row with 1 hanging hook each. The was a communal kitchen which was helpful because if you can imagine being in the middle of nowhere slap bang ... read more

Firstly I would like to apologise for not writing anything in such a long time. It was really expensive in Perth and Ayers Rock for the internet so I held off. Consequently, this means that I have lots to talk about so I'll try my best not to leave anything out but also bore you in the process!!! So I left you all as we arrived in Perth blurry eyed with instructions in hand we headed off to find the bus stop only to be told that it was at least a 40min walk away. Quickly re-thought plan and went for the one and only option available (after a taxi) and jumped on the shuttle bus for $30 (one pound=$1.61 Oz dollars) each for a return journey to and from our hostel. Not great but no ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand September 10th 2010

Wow what a day, we were picked up from our hotel at 0830 to be driven an hour out of Khao Lak to the Win's Elephant trekking spot. As we pulled down there were lots of lovely elephants that were set up for trekking i.e. had a double seat strapped to them, chained to trees. It was weird to see such magnificent animals chained up and looking so docile and bizarrely quite small. However, I guess it's no different to all the camel trekking I've done in certain countries. Plus as bad as it sounds it is keeping the elephant population up and is helping to keep the economy of these local villages going. So after I'd quickly got over my ethical dilemma, I know it didn't take long, we boarded our elephant and set off ... read more

Evening everyone! I've finally got around to doing my first blog entry but before we go any further I want to say sorry in advance for the amount of spelling and grammatical errors there will be throughout. I wish I could say it was the keyboard but we all know I'm just an awful speller-lol So lets begin at the very beginning…….Sarah and me got to Heathrow and enjoyed the luxuries of the VIP lounge which meant free booze and snacks and most of all quietness and comfy chairs away from the madness of T3- thanks to Jamie for the heads up on that only cost seventeen pounds, so defo worth it and thanks to Nanny Rita whose money for the airport paid for it. After our 11 hour flight, which was very painless, we arrived ... read more
