We arrived in Puerto Iguazú after a 17hr bus ride, our longest so far, and headed to El Parque Nacional Iguazú. The Falls lie on the border of Brasil and Argentina. We approached from the Argentina side: cheaper and better. It is a series of falls, so you can look at several up close and then go to another part of the park and see a panaramic view of the entire series. We were told that this was impressive and it lived up to our expectations. We took a small boat with a few other people up to a couple of the falls. We had some tough guys on our boat that kept joking with the driver. Finally he stuck the whole boat right under one of the falls. We couldn't see or hear; it was ... read more

Of course the people make the experience. That was especially true in Buenos Aires. We stayed at the Che Lagarto Hostel two blocks from Avenida 9 de Julio. We planned on staying four days and ended up staying ten. We hung out with people from all over the world and had a blast. We were even invited to a true family asado (BBQ) at Natalia and Florencia´s home. I would have to say that so far, Buenos Aires was the highlight of my trip.... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Tigre May 6th 2008

Tigre is basically a suburb just north of Buenos Aires. It takes over an hour by train because it stops every 30ft or so. It is on the delta of the Rio Parana. We took a boat tour through the delta and had lunch at a restaurant next to the water.... read more

The Cemetario de Recoleta is in Central Buenos Aires. We spent the afternoon wandering around graves and stepping over cats. I took over 200 photographs there so this is just a sample. I heard multiple times before we went that the grave of Eva Peron was not very impressive, which is true, but the cemetary itself was amazing.... read more

South America » Uruguay » West » Colonia del Sacramento April 27th 2008

We took a two hour bus ride from Montevideo, the capital, to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. This town is the opposite of Montevideo. It is a small colonial town across the bay from Buenos Aires, Argentina. In fact it is a common location for those staying and/or working in Argentina to visit as a method of renewing their 90 day tourist limit. Many will take a ferry across to Uruguay for lunch then head back to Buenos Aires for another 3 months. It reminded me of a small New England town with different shades of leaves. Alot of antique cars, bicycles and mini-motorcycles. It is another colonial town, but with a mix of Spanish and Portuguese influence.... read more

We took an overnight bus from Porto Alegre, Brasil to Montevideo, Uruguay. It is unusual, but we had the unfortunate luck to go through intensive customs. No rubber gloves, but they woke everybody up, unloaded the baggage and made us get in line for a search. Uruguay gets mixed reviews, but I thought it was great. Montevideo is packed with beautiful indie-rockers. We stayed in the big central plaza and got our first taste of the vampiric nature of Uruguayans and Argentines. They go to dinner at 10:30, a bar at midnight, then dance clubs until 6am. Great town, great people. ... read more

After Gramado we returned to Porto Alegre, Brasil. Karine and her sister Livia were kind enough to take us in for a few days. We mainly laid low and got our fix of American TV with Brasilian commercials while I sick. After a brief appearance on Brasilian TV, we decided to head for Uruguay.... read more

We took Karine's car to Gramado stopping by an amazing Buddhist Temple on the way. Gramado is a German town in the mountains of southern Brasil. There is a large German and Italian population in this region and the town is designed in the Swiss Alps style. In the winter they have a well regarded film festival similar to Sundance in the US. It rained while we were there, but that was no problem. It was a great time.... read more
