Gaunajuato is the capital of Guanajuato state. An old and important city in Mexico's history. Diego Rivera was born here; his house is now a small museum. A battle here against the Spanish in 1810 was the first major victory for Hidalgo and the independence movement. When he was captured the following year his head was put on a spit to illustrate the consequences for rebellion. I completely fell in love with this town. Walking throught the streets I had the feeling that this was home, that this is where I am supposed to be. We shall see...... read more

La Quemada is a set of ruins and a pyramid 45 minutes outside Zacatecas. They are not as spectacular as some of the ruins in southeast Mexico, but they are mysterious, because nobody is sure about their origins. There is controversy as to the culture that inhabited them and for what purpose. We spent the day wandering around them and enjoying a beautiful day.... read more

I spent the 10th with John (UK), James (Australia) and Tomas (Switzerland) hiking up the Cerra de la Bufa, taking the teleferico down and touring the mine. They even gave us hard hats for the mine tour. Que Padre. On the way back I got some photos of the people gathering in one of the plazas for a clown and comedy show. This happens every evening. A really lovely city.... read more

I was on a total of four buses to get from Real de Catorce to Zacatecas. I arrived there a little after 9pm, and the town looked amazing at night. Luckily the hostal (Hostal Villa Colonial) had some open beds. $9 a night with an amazing view of the whole town. Zacatecas has one of the coolest cathedrals in all of Mexico, a lot of museums, and a cable car (teleferico) that takes you to the top of La Cerra de la Bufa, a hill/mountain on one side of the bowl shaped city. One of the oldest silver mines in North America is here. It goes seven levels down under ground. The first few levels are flooded, so the tour takes you four levels down. This is a very safe town and I can't help use ... read more

Real de Catorce is an old mining village up Sierra de Catorce mountain range at 9000 ft. Silver was discovered there in 1772 and became a huge supplier for the Spanish. The last part of getting there is 17 miles of cobblestone road through the mountains followed by a 2.3 km tunnel. The tunnel can only pass one car width at a time so they radio back and forth to take turns letting vehicles in or out. I went with a guy I met from Austin and we decided to walk the tunnel, not a popular choice, but well worth it. The village is very small and at this time we were the only two gringos there. He left the next day and I stayed on for a few more nights. I definitely stood out like ... read more

Monterrey, Mexico. I forgot my camera the one day I was there so these photos are courtesy of TJ Joyce, a guy from Austin I met here and traveled to Real de Catorce with. We saw a AAA Legue baseball game. There was a power outage and a bench clearing brawl. It was a great time.... read more
